JB+ CEL

***Update: Code was caused by the unit being damaged by the previous owner, Mike and Terry have offered to fix it for free even though the unit was bought used from another member!

My roommate who drives a 6MT 135i just installed his JB+ and aFe DCI yesterday. After install we allowed the car to idle for a little while and noticed that the exhaust appeared to be smoking...it was very light and only noticeable about 2 feet away from the tips before it disappeared and had no smell. We then turned the car off and noticed a weird singular snapping noise coming from the engine bay which neither of us had heard before. After driving the car for a day or so he got a CEL and the snapping persists shortly after he shuts the car off.

The car is brand new (<1000 miles) and the JB+ was at around 60% setting.

Has anyone experienced any of these problems before?

The plan is to scan the car with a friend’s BT Tool and go from there...

Report back with the CEL. Is the snapping like the sound of liquid burning off on a hot metal part?

Its possible that its condensation dripping off of the AC onto an oil line or something but after hearing it a couple times I decided that it sounded more electrical than anything.

+1. He knows his stuff. He may just tell you to scan it for tampering codes and take it on in, though.

BT scan tool is out of reach at the moment, took a long hard listen under the hood after driving it and narrowed the snapping noise down to thermal expansion/contraction of the heat shields on the passenger side of the engine bay.

We took the JB+ off and unhooked the battery to see if the CEL would clear...no dice.

My theory is there was some bad QC on a spark plug or coil and it was unable to support the higher boost levels causing detonation. If the scanner reads detonation cylinder X then we will know. I know this is a common problem with people who are running JB3 or V3 but have never heard of it being a problem with JB+

That being said, I had a JB+ on my 335 before upgrading to JB3 and I have not had a single problem with either and am a very satisfied BMS customer.

Does anyone know if the tuner code will trip the CEL permanently? I always thought it was a 'silent code' but my roommates CEL is staying on even after 3 starts.

The snapping noise may be due to your car is so new (with less than 1000 miles) and the noise was produced due to the thermal expansion of different metal parts attached to the engine. The noise will quite down after all metal parts settled in.

Ok Mike N54 answered all my questions...It appears that we had the JB+ at higher than default settings which triggers the tuner code on the latest BMW software. We will still scan it to confirm and clear codes but I'm fairly certain that's what has happened.

FYI 'default' setting is 12 o'clock

Good to know you figured that out, and the snapping noise is something I hear here and there with my car that only has 1000 miles.

That is just the first guess, the BT scan will tell all! Let me know what you find.

This is a good time to point out its always important to check the settings on the JB+ if buying used! All new units ship at default settings but there are a lot of guys out there running 75-100% so always check!

P0237 (Turbocharger Boost Sensor A Circuit Low) is what the OBT scanner read

Terry said that the code would be thrown by the JB+ not being plugged in properly. After inspecting the Unit I found that one of the wires seems to have been crimped so it looks like it might have been damaged by the previous owner.

This would explain why the CEL was triggered after a bump because the jarring of the box in the engine bay might have caused a momentary lapse in connection if the wire is damaged which would result in the P0237 code

If its a loose wire which the code seems to support I am happy to take care of it for you under warranty even though it was purchased used

Just PM me for details to send it back and we can get it repaired and fixed for you!

Mike

On another note, its a good idea to inspect any tune you buy used to ensure none of the wires were damaged during an overly zealous un-install.

I installed my jb+ and set it to 70% and have had no issues so far.. Ive driven about 600miles since the install with no CEL...was thinking about cranking it up to 100% but after reading this thread I think I might hold off for now
