Our detailing guide should help you get a lot of the basics down. I would highly recommend reading that through carefully. Generally speaking here are the rules for using a pad starting from heaviest cutting to the lightest:

Yellow - Heavy Cutting Polishes
Purple Foamed Wool - Medium/Heavy Cutting Polishes
Orange - Medium Cutting Polishes
Green - Light Cutting Polishes
White - Light Cutting Polishes or AIO
Black - Glazes, very light polishes
Blue - Sealants, Liquid Waxes and very light polishes

We have tried to label each polish in our polishing section of our site. Use the filter on the left hand side to see just the light polishes or just the heavy polishes, etc.

You can get away with using just one pad per coat of product. However when polishing I like to use at least two pads and switch half way through. If you use 3 switch 1/3, etc. etc. Using a fresh pad will help you work in the polishes better and get maximum results!

Let me know if you have other questions.

thanks greg!... would u recommend the 4.5" pads or the 6.5" when using the PC 7424... I should have ordered the package that gives your 3 of each instead of 1 but i wasn't thinking and I probably should pick up some more pads.

Both are great, just make sure you get the matching backing plate. The 4" pads give you a little more cutting power, which is the major difference. If you need more pads check out the Lake Country 4" Pad Kit - 7x pads or the Lake Country 6.5" Pad Kit - 7x pads. We also have discounts for 14x and 28x packages. Let me know if you have any other questions.
