Grrr Old People in Buicks!

So I stopped in Arlington this morning to get some coffee, parked the car, and started to open the door and this old guy in a Buick - at least half a block away as I start opening the door - just slowly plows into the door, scraping it all up.

Grrrrrrrrr!

He gets argumentative and doesn't want to file a police report and gets ready to drive away before I pull out my cell. Ugh.

Even better: taking pictures with my phone and he tells me to "send him copies once I get them developed."

Not too bad, but the first real dent on my 1er!

That sucks! I guess you're lucky that you didn't have the door open a little further. He would have ripped the door off the car. Or worse, plowed into you if you had been stepping out.

The sad thing is, your insurance may view it as your fault. Opening a door into traffic is always the responisibility of the door opener. You always have to assume that everyone else on the road is a blind idiot.

Major suckage. Sorry to hear. Does the lip protrude at all, with the door closed? or is it barely noticeable with the door closed?

Yeah, insurance is saying I'll likely be held at fault, which is super obnoxious!

As a cyclist I'm always super careful opening doors -- I really had no notion that the Buick could possibly hit me. This happened on Mass Ave in Arlington where the lanes are literally about 40 feet wide - there's no reason at all for cars to be driving that close to parked ones.

The damage is pretty minor -- with the door closed there's a little bend in the metal and a few paint scrapes. Body shop estimate is <$600, so not too bad but less than my deductible! Grrr...

I was wondering if they'd zing you for it. Sucks, but it's in their guides to automatically make the parked car opening their door into traffic, the guilty party.

You may want to drop the claim, if so. At least there won't be an "accident" on your record.
