Newb Question: Does DTC effect accelleration or just stability?

Hey guys,

Automatic 135i here. I'm not very knowledgeable on cars but I did notice that when I put it in sport mode and floor it, it seems like the car is limiting itself - especially compared to some videos I've seen on the internet. I always thought DTC was just for traction and stability, but does it also slow the car down?

For example, ive seen 0-60 numbers for the car in the range of 4.7 to 5.3, and I think the manufacturer number is 5.1. Was this achieved with DTC off?

Thanks so much, I know its a stupid question but I dont have access to my manual at the moment.

If you're losing traction, that's what's slowing you down. The ECU pulls some power to limit wheel spin.

Pressing the button once and putting it into DTC will allow more wheel spin than the normal mode, but the only real way to control traction is to reduce power. If you want to see what the car's like without the ECU stepping in at all, hold the button down for a few seconds. That will remove the traction control, and it will allow the E-Diff to do its job, making both rear tires dig for traction. The car will be faster, but you also have to pay attention because it CAN get loose.

You you nail it, just be prepared to back off quickly if it starts to get sideways. It's probably a good idea to play around with it where there aren't any other vehicles, and there's plenty of room. The short wheelbase on these cars makes them a little more prone to spinning out when the rear tires break loose than a lot of other vehicles I've owned. You can control it, but you've got to be on your game.
