start stop button

Some times you push the button and nothing happens. You have to push it again to get it to start.. today took three times anyone else have this problem. Oh it happens after the car sits for a while. Once it starts you can stop it and then hit it again starts right up. Wierd

Instead of just pushing and letting go, try holding it down for 2 seconds. I don't know why, but that usually works.

I've never had this happen at all.

Is you car an automatic, or manual?

Also, do you have comfort access, or do you put the key in the dash?

Interesting. Mine a manual, and I have CA. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the issue at all though.

I'm wondering if you're hitting the button before it's had time to read the key, and since mine's being read as I'm getting in the car, I don't see it.

I've never had this problem; maybe it's an automatic thing.

Clutch in, press Start Engine, good to go to the rodeo.

I imagine the lack of a clutch being pressed in on an auto may have something to do with it?

On an auto, you step on the brake.

Have Fun,
Rick

And if the brake (or clutch with a MT) isn't engaged, than pushing the button will only turn on the ignition - "Radio Readiness" in BMW speak. It will require a second push (along with brake/clutch pedal) to start the engine.

Took me a couple of months to get acclimated to that arrangement.

I talked with a BMW tech one time and he mentioned that he has had to replace quite a few of the key slots. He was referring to the E9x (this was prior to the 1-series coming out). They probably share the same part.

but i dont have to push on the key to make it work just push the button 2 or 3 times so who knows. i think the slot only gets the key near the sensor. But that could be it

yea, even with clutch depressed sometimes it takes 3 or 4 times and I'm pushing it so much that it sometimes starts and i don't realize it over the radio and I turn it off and then start it again, I think the whole process is annoying, granted that I always get in the car and go right away, I don't usually ever fart around with random shit before starting the car

It's a little strange to me that they make you step on the brake in an automatic, even though it's in park. I've never had another vehicle that had that requirement.

every auto euro car i've driven has had the step on the brake requirement. american carmakers recently started to add this too after little children were able to turn the car on while standing on the front seat and then were able to shift into reverse or drive with steering column mounted gear levers and run over their parents or siblings- this was big news a few years ago

Owners manual page 56 - "Starting the engine" explains it for both MT and AT...
