New Z4 sdrive35is and effect on N54 in 1 series?

Do you guys think that the engine upgrades added to the new Z4 to be introduced as a 2011 model will be available for the 135i? The overboost feature seems pretty cool, and it seems to be an increase over the BMW Performance upgrade for the N54 engine.

Here is a link to the edmunds story: http://blogs.insideline.com/straight...show.html#more

Also available on the splash page on this site.

I am just surprised that they would be increasing the power on the N54 to such an extent when they are supposedly introducing the N55 into several lines including the 1 next April according to some of the speculation/confirmed accounts from dealers?

If the life cycle of the current 1 series is extended beyond 2012, I would not be surprised to see an engine upgrade. Unless emissions are an issue, I would imagine it would be off the N54 framework.

My lease is up in 2012...I am very curious to know what I will be repalcing my current 135 with. Don't really need an M as a DD but a lighter , incrementally more powerful 135 would be fine with me. I am sure the n55 will be a great engine but (HPFP issues aside)
is a smooth, powerful engine for my driving needs.

PS..I don't think the dealers know anymore than we do and more often than not--alot LESS.
I had to thell my dealer about the bearing problems when I had my 2002 M-3..they did not even know BMW had opted to replace bearings and extend the engine warranty.

I'm thinking the SuperSport of the current generation would get the same engine treatment. If the 3 series wont get this, the 1 will not get it either.

How does this fit in with the rumored N55 changeover? Why would they continue to use N54 in a new model...

Very expensive proposition to keep two engines in production for one trim level of an already niche model.

The introduction of the N55 for the early 2011 models is just speculation. The info I've seen from people who have historically been the best sources suggests that the N55 is not coming to the 135 or 335 until the new cars are launched in a couple of years. Part of the reason for that is the R&D that was done for the performance kit and being able to sell cars like this Z435is with the increased power. I expect we will see a 135is and 335is coupe in the coming months.

People can believe what they want to believe, and if they think they're going to get a 135 with the N55 engine in April I can't tell them they're wrong, but they should consider they may end up disappointed.

The Z4is is going to be a rocket, but I think it may be a tough sell if it carries a big price premium since you can get the same power out of a $300 JB+ without (IMHO) a major risk of problems. I don't think the is version really addresses the major criticisms of the new Zed, but as always the market will decide how compelling it is in the end.

Thanks for the link OP.

Nope, the Z4 has the 7 speed DCT (twin-clutch manual with computer shifting) as used in the M3. The 135 uses the ZF 6 speed automatic only.

The 6 speed manual is still standard on the current Z4 3.5. The 7 sp. DCT replaces the Steptronic as an $1,575 option.

The 3.0 doesn't offer the DCT but retains the Steptronic as an $1,325 option.

If they really do change the engine in the 335 to the N55, that will mark the 3rd engine for the current generation 3-sedan. They had a year or two with the 330, then 335 N54, and now the rumored N55? That's excessive by any measure. Wouldn't it have been so much easier to just fix the effing HPFP issue?

In think if N54 stays with 306 hp it will be replaced by N55 that also has 306 hp. If not the N54 will get 326 or 340 hp, but it seems unreasonable as you can get 326 hp from BMW Performance. So I still think the 135i will also get N55. The E92 for sure, it gets its facelift (for facelift the 4.4l V8 TT will replace the 4.8l V8 NA, so X5 xDrive48i will be X5 xDrive50i). N54 will be for the 135is or M1 how they will call it. Yet remember, BMW Motorsport is working at a Z4 GT3.

BMW 120d (177 hp)----------------->BMW 120d Motorsport (245 hp)
BMW 320si (177 hp)----------------->BMW 320si Motorpsort (275 hp)
BMW Z4 M Coupé (343 hp)----------->BMW Z4 M Coupé GT3 (400 hp)
BMW Z4 E89 (306 hp)----------->BMW Z4 GT3 E89 (?????450 hp?????)

Maybe this engine in next M3 F30 or Z4 M E89 or yet M1 E87?
