M1 New Body or Old Body?

Which M1 would everybody prefer to own?

M1 based on the current 135i or wait for an M1 based on the new 1 series body style in 2012?

An M1 version of the 2012 body could be 3-4yrs away. I mean the version of this body style is over a year away. Plus, we dont even know how the 2012 will look.

I would buy an E82/E88 M1 just because it will have a turboed 6.

I know the potential of a highly tuned 4 banger, but idk, I just cant shake that JDM feeling. Maybe its a generational thing.

my impression gleaned from report by bmw officials and internet speculation have led me to believe the M1 announced will be based from existing E82. Although a hatch back M1 will be equally as attractive.

BMW does not release the M version at the introduction of a totally new body style (I do not think it has ever happened). It was my impression that the M1 would use the E82 platform. I know every M3 and M5 made had at least one year of the new body style before the M variant was available. That's been the case with the E28, E34, E60, E30, E36, E46, and the E9X.

The M is usually always the last variant for each platform so the M1 will be based on the E82.

I guess it means that if the M1 deliveries on the E82 chassis start in mid 2011, just ~2 years later there is a real chance that there will be a new M1 based on the F20 chassis....

2 years seems quite short, meaning if you want to keep the car for 2 years or longer - by the time your ready to sell, your car will have de-valued quite a lot due to the model change.

time will tell...

The F20 M1 is years away... The E82 M1 will makes it's debut in a year or so, followed shortly by the entirely new F20 1 series. I believe the F20 will only be available in the hatch initially, then the coupe will follow with all the variants, then the F20 M1 after that.

Would probably prefer the E82 M1. I'm sure the F20 M1 would be bigger in size.

We most likely will not see the next 1 until MY2013 here in the states. This new M will not only keep the series alive, but also will bring more people to notice the current 1er prior to the next body style change.

id probably rather have the e82 body style if it were released more recently, however as we all know, old body styles look like crap fast. So unless the body change is not nearly drastic, id take the f20.

(regardless of what i say ill end up buying the m1 the year it releases lol)

Not sure if this is gospel or not, but if true ///M variants will now be released virtually right on the heels of the baseline variant.

Makes good business sense to me. Strike while the iron is hot to reap as much profits during the models life-cycle as practicable.

Either way, I'm seriously only considering the next gen model.

I was under the impression that the F20 M1 will be powered by a highly tuned Turboed 4 cylinder.

I don't think the engine choice for the next generation M1 is something that's even a substantiated rumor right now, let alone set in stone. I'm pretty sure everything that's out there is just magazine speculation with basically nothing to back it up.

An M1 with less than 350Hp just isn't going to be relevant, and getting that much power out of a production 4cyl is going to require forced induction. I'll be shocked if they go to anything smaller than a 3.0L I6. It's just too hard to make the power levels needed with much less displacement.

+ 1 This is absolutely correct.

I believe there will be a short period of time where the E82 135i will sell along side the E82 M1, and not long after the F20 135i will come out. It'll be tough deciding between the E82 M1 or the F20 135i replacement. Heart will go with the E82 M1 but logic will say get the F20 135i, it's newer shape, new technology, probably not much slower and better value.
