BMW to start up a targeted lease program for the ActiveE in the USA
It seems BMW's Concept ActiveE isn't just a showcar. Following their sucessful MINI-e lease program in the US BMW will start a similar program for the electric 1-series. This means that the car will be available in select cities and you will have to apply to own the car. The actual number of cars which will be available is unknown. But if history is any guide it won't exactly be easy to get your hands on the car. Looking at the MINI-e program, there are currently 450 of the cars on the roads out of an applicant pool of over 1800. Whats the long term goal? Well, BMW sees this pilot program, which is to launch in 2011, as a stepping stone to a full production electric BMW that would be available to anyone with a checkbook sometime in 2015. With all the hype surrounding the ActiveE and how this is an electric car that you have a hard time discerning as an electric, count me in as interested! Source: MotorAuthority

The 1 Series seems like the perfect platform for this. It's good to see it's more than just a concept. Electric cars make a lot of sense for a good portion of the population, and I'm all for getting them here sooner rather than later.

If it's anything like the Mini-E, leasing one of these will be more like paying for the opportunity to field-test BMW's cars for them.

The Mini-E was a $800/mo lease, not including a couple of grand to update the voltage in my house for 220/240.
Heart said yes, wallet/wife said no- $800/mo is getting near M3 territory. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif |

I am surprised and impressed that BMW has these cars available for lease. Props to BMW for championing the alternative fuel vehicles.
I love the idea of a sporty looking electric car, the 1 and 3 are perfect

Not trying to thread jack, but on a similar note:
I don't know about your town, but what about those cars with the decals on them saying: Convert ANY car into a hybrid (then a phone number or email/website)... ...when hydrogen comes, are we all going to need to do some type of conversion, or just sell these and buy hydrogen cars?
