Haha I know, I was simply making a point. But If I really want to get technical I can say that the Audi dynasty was built on open cockpit cars (the R8 and R10) even though in the LMP1 class you are allowed to run a closed cockpit. Obviousy its more than that particular choice. But anyway, that can be debated until eternity, so it isnt really worth it.

Add the Miata, Elise,Z3 and Z4 to that list aswell. Pupose-built roadsters for the win, wouldve gotten a CPOed Z4 M if I didnt need the back seat every now and again.

Let's try to speculate about other things - will the standard 5 double-spoke (teaser pic) be lighter than the optional (premium?) wheel? They're both 18" if I read Scott's comments correctly...

I was wondering the same thing. I would not imagine a weight difference. The premium probably looks a lot better.

Yes, there will be a difference. Standard are M6 rims and Optional are M3 GTS rims, only in 18" of course. Well I think so.

I agree--but if you look hard at the top right hand section of the picture, you can see the very tip of the caliper....makes me wonder if the color of the calipers have any significance.....

The best thing to me about this picture is the obvious suspension drop--look how little space there is between wheel well and the tire!!!!

It looks to me like it could be the same car we have been seeing teaser shots of--notice the rubber added to the wheel well--this was to allow for the wider tires, right?

I'm hoping the premiums will be forged - on the M3, the 19" forged options are lighter than the standard 18". And only about a thousand bucks more expensive.

Just curious if anyone knows (or would like to speculate) whether the new ///M1 will borrow from the Tii or BMW Performance parts bin? I could see them using the steering wheel and interior trim pieces, or maybe the wheels as the 18" option.

What made me think of this was seeing that the 335is is using the BMW Performance wheels.

Here is a description of the 1M Coupe back in Feb. It seems most of these descriptions were correct. A few exceptions, like the car having 19" wheels vice 18s.

The side sills accomodate a more sculpted appearance again indentifying the car from the standard 135i or BMW performance packet.

Like the front end of the car the rear end is wider with a look that is almost similar to the transition between the previous E46 Coupe and the E46 M3 , broader wheel arches accomodate the larger track , The classic "Ducktail" appearence makes a welcome return with the spoiler now integrated as part of the bootlid for a more cohesive look and additional aid for aerodynamics.

The rear valance/diffuser area takes it's direction from the standard 135i but with open ducts for aerodynamic purpose , the duct is seperated by typical M quad exhaust pipes.
The roof of the car receives the typical BMW M Coupe addition of a reinforced Carbon Fibre Roof to help maintain the lightweight concept.

Summary:
  • More muscular appearance than standard 1-series
  • Trapezoid grille flanked by two intakes to allow extra brake cooling
  • Six piston brakes
  • High performance intercooler
  • Sportier looking headlights than standard 1-series
  • Small lip spoilers above brake duct inlets to provide extra air flow and downforce
  • The front wings of the car are massaged slightly to accomodate the wider track. Rear end is also wider.
  • Standard 18" 5-spoke wheels with optional 18" Competition wheels (18" will be the optimium wheel size for the M1)
  • Signature M side vent
  • Broader wheel arches to accomodate larger track
  • "Ducktail" CSL style rear trunk (integrated spoiler)
  • Rear valance/diffuser area takes its direction from the standard 135i but with open ducts for aerodynamic purpose
  • Signature M quad exhaust pipes
  • Reinforced carbon fiber roof

Yes that was when I saw the car as a full scale clay model in the M Design Studio. Unfortunately in some cases the designers vision has to be altered to suit the engineers needs. The side intake is one such idea as the initial intakes placed on the upper part of the wing were too small and inadequate.

The color of the car will remain exclusive to the 1M but it will also feature with the new BMW M6 in mid 2012, and we might add it to an end of the road M3 before it's demise.

After the World Premiere I will show you every Avatar and every photo teased previously which show some of the early conception of the car.

The car should be in Los Angeles later tonight or early in the morning , we will be shooting to Wednesday and then the car will be transported to New York and flown back to Munich by the weekend.
