Arrow UPDATES on BMW 1M / M1 news, rumors, and speculation

There'll be an E82 M1
  • Dr Kay Segler, CEO of BMW ///M, told German Auto Motor und Sport in November 2009:
"Currently, we concentrate on evaluating the feasibility to produce an M variant based on the current generation 1 series. [...]
Usually, the development for such a car needs 3 years. But, we're planning to communicate the first details on the car around Christmas 2010
with its market launch scheduled for Spring 2011
    ".
  • UPDATED: Road & Track citing a BMW source regarding a BMW 1 series M: "First, that 'there seems to be something to the rumors.'
Second, it will happen during the North American coupe’s current lifecycle.
    "
    (see HERE)
  • Scott providing detailed information on the features and design options of the car.
UPDATED: Latest information on the M1 from Scott can be found HERE
  • Mario Theissen, director of BMW Motorsport Division, when asked whether it's too late for an M version of the current 1 series:
"Yes, certainly, it is too late, although you can always look forward to it… but I cannot talk about product plans for the future”.
There won't be an E82 M1
  • No appearance of the M1 Concept at Geneva 2010
  • Edmunds Inside Line Blog citing a source inside BMW:
"'If we do something, it'll be a 135is like we've done with the Z4 and the 3 Series,'
the source told us with a wink."

Autoblog reported the same, but apparently cited this Edmunds report.
  • Different publications considering above mentioned spy shots to be early mules of the next generation 1 series
  • Mario Theissen, director of BMW Motorsport Division, when asked whether it's too late for an M version of the current 1 series:
"Yes, certainly, it is too late, although you can always look forward to it… but I cannot talk about product plans for the future”.

Best regards,
south

Thought South's post would be a good one to sticky and update over time. Seems like we get so many new rumors and speculations regularly now, so it's sometimes hard to keep track of.

M1 or not M1? That is the QUESTION.

I'll believe it when I see it. Too many rumors at the moment to really tell if it's coming for sure. If it really comes, it would make for an awesome little car.

I realize everyone is frustrated at the persistent rumor-stage of this car (if it even exists), but let's keep the sarcastic / off-topic banter to the Off-Topic forum. This sticky thread exists for interested members to easily reference and for us to easily update with new information. If you don't have anything on-topic or constructive to add, simply move on.

Just wait until something pops up. A 135is seems unnecessary if it uses the N54 + overboost.

With that much details from Scott, it is either going to happen or BMW is playing with us. As we know Scott is official. If the M1 doesn't happen, I am going to buy a Porsche next :P.

Not much reactions in here it s the same on the GTS news on M-Power also not manny positiv reactions.

It s all marketing and nothing special happens.

A brand as porsche see what kind of impact the 918 has. The say nothing in front but if they bring something it is really special. The whole enthusiasts automotive world talkes about the 918.

PR guys at their core are most wary of what cannot be said. Granted, he didn't seem to leave the door open at all, but I don't think it means much given the context.

The fact that he did not hesitate or give it a second thought is discouraging.

He encourages buyers to mod their own 135i, void the warranty and save BMW money for not having to honour!

Not sure I like to see a BMW badged FF. They better give it another brand. - Unless they can make it 50/50.

I spoke to my friend Erik Luchsinger "Aftersales manager for BMW NA." He told me the M1 has not been nixed. They really want to put out an ///M car that is more afforable than the M3. He said when and if it does happen we won't see anything until December 2010.
