Dealing with dealers in Oz

Guys - a little help please. I am just back in Oz after 10 years in the US. Putting aside the highway robbery that BMW perpetrates in Oz , I am trying to get a feel for what can and cannot be done with dealers. (To be honest this concerns a new X5 order (not a 1 series) but this is the best Oz forum I have found). In the US the dealer fee is about $700 and people talk not about what discount to list price they can get, but rather how little over invoice they can pay. What is the story in Oz - how much can you push the dealers?. The dealer delivery I am being quoted for an X5 is almost $5k! - how much can I push them down? In round figures, if a car's drive away price is $140k, how much can one typically push the dealers? Would really appreciate some advice - I feel like a lamb to the slaughter here...

I would say at the moment with new car sales not exactly roaring ahead, I would look for a discount in the range of at least 10% over what you have been quoted drive away. That's just my gut feeling, I'll let others who have bought X5s comment with more accuracy!

Another option is to contact Jason at costpricenewcars.com.au, I'm not affiliated with him but I did use him to try to figure out the best deal I could get on my 135i.

That site isnt properly functional taipan.

I would think if it is a car in stock then you will be able to get around 10% discount. If it is a special order, then less.

Not 100% sure on this though.

Ask for EPP (Executive Preference Plan) Pricing, it'll knock a chunk out of the dealer delivery & on-roads, if you've got a half decent title & work at a company they know it shouldn't be an issue.

Do some research on what kind of discounts people can get on the model your after, also have a look at what demo's are selling for. Not telling you to buy a demo, but you'll be surprised at the number of dealers that'll order you in a brand spanker packed with options for the price of a demo (which is below list price).

Unfortunatley in AUS i am yet to ever find out what invoice cost is for any bimmer & that's after years across the various active BMW forums frequented by aussies.

10% seems about right if the car is in stock. If it is the new lci x5 or custom order then between 5-7%. which model are you ordering?

Like my dealer told me (what a nice guy) the whole 'dealer delivery' thing is illusory. You don't need to specifically target bringing down the $5k delivery fee, the final drive away price is all you should care about. Like the others have stated, they should be willing to negotiate a 10% discount on a showroom model.

You can get 5-10% off showroom stock, as Jeff said above.

Otherwise, you can probably get 5k off standard as BMW have just run a 4k-off promotion here. We pay excessive amounts on the cars here in Oz.

Welcome home, too!

If you are ready to buy an X5 very soon then PM me for a contact for a great salesperson at a BMW dealer.

Thanks

Thanks guys for the colour. I am looking at an LCI car - a 40D. The car is alrady in production for a delivery in July - so I guess I should get better pricing than with an order but not as good as a car on the lot. I will PM you Mr Blonde

7-10% unless it's on deal. Last few people I know who bought a X5 recently has at least 14k. That's NOT the LCI though. I assume they are trying to get rid of the X5s before the LCI comes in.
