OEM wheels on new car have scrapes and gouges!
This might be better in the tire and wheel section, but it's really a service issue in my opinion. So, I had the dealer install brand new 18" Style 182 rims on my brand new 2011 128i that I picked up last week. It cost me an extra $1,700 for the tires and wheels. Upon cleaning and close inspection of the wheels. I noticed that there are gouges right through the finish on the rims.
Two wheels are particularly bad. These gouges are right on the edge. They are about 3/4" long and evenly spaced around the wheel. I am thinking that some dolt at the dealer who installed the wheels messed up during mounting. Does anyone know what the mounting setup is like for the run flats. Are there clamps or somethig that can gouge a wheel like that?Anyway, I took the car in to have my CA take a look and while I was there I noticed that in addition, one of the wheels actually looks like it was dropped on it's edge and scraped along the floor. Again, hard to see if you are standing back, but these scrapes are right through the finish and are likely to corrode and peel over time. What are these guys amatures? The dealer CA agreed that they shouldn't be there and to have them repaired, but I am starting to think that I should ask for replacements. I mean I did spend $1,700 for the wheel and tire upgrade and they f'd them up. What do you think? Will a repair be as good as new? Is this normal damage during mounting? Should certain precautions be taken during mounting of RFT's to avoid this? |

Certainly not normal. But common. Dolts operating tire mounting equipment. You should demand new replacements. If you wanted refinished wheels you would have bought salvage and had them refinished in the first place.

The thought even crossed my mind that the wheels may not have been 100%new. Maybe some lying around that came off of another car or something that someone didn't like and he tried to pass them off as new. I negotiated with him to get the price down to 1,700 including balancing. Maybe he tried to pull a fast one. I hate to think so, but I guess anything is possible. May just be paranoid, but either way it's BS. |

Quick update, I took the wheels in to have them repaired free of charge yesterday. They look okay. If I look really close I can still see where some of the damage was, but you really have to look close. At least I don't have to worry about corrosion or peeling, but I am still pissed that I now have referbished wheels that I paid full new wheel price for.
The dealer told me that they just bought a new $40K mounting machine that won't do that in the future. So, it's almost like they admitted that the old machine f'd up wheels. Just a tip, think twice before you have a dealer install your runflats. Go to a tire rack approved service location. |
