Is it possible to add Blue Tooth as a dealer installed option?
So, I made the mistake of not getting the blue tooth option on my 128i and I really miss it. I noticed that the car has all the buttons for the phone stearing wheel etc. They are just not active. Does this mean that the car is already wired for it? Can I buy it and have it installed by the dealer? Or, myself?

Hi There!
Yes it is possible, but it is pricey! I was JUST looking into this yesterday and...it wasn't pretty. Here are the parts you need: QTY DES. PART# BEST PRICE FOUND 1 BLUETOOTH ARIAL ANTENNA 84-50-6-928-461 $20.50 1 MICROPHONE 84-31-6-938-762 $26.14 1 TELEMETRICS (TCU) 84-10-9-126-533 $344.49 1 LOUDSPEAKER 65-13-6-938-657 $16.06 1 SWITCH CONSOLE ROOF 61-31-9-205-151 $269.54 2 CLIP FOR BT ANTENNA 52-20-1-964-201 $0.30 4 HEX NUT (TCU MOUNT) 41-24-8-147-832 $0.22 1 BACKUP ANTENNA (ASSIST) 65-20-9-154-263 $37.01 2 SCREW BACKUP ANTENNA (ASSIST) 07-11-9-901-364 $0.48 The "SWITCH CONSOLE ROOF" will depend on trim color. I THINK that you can skip the backup antenna and screws for it if you don't want to ever have assist, but its probably a good idea to put it all in at the same time for the small cost. Now, the install was quoted at 3-6 hours at $140 an hour (this will vary by dealer. But as you can see.....it will cost some cash! Between $1,100 - $1,695 for everything (parts & install). What I decided to do was get the BMW Personal Navigation System. It is actually, for some reason cheap right now. It is basically a rebranded Garmin that integrates with the radio (for turn by turn and such, auto reducing volume), now the best part of this is...it supports bluetooth phone over the car radio, and phone book syncing to the GPS itself. So that is a good compromise. It also has a kit that mounts to the dash and show no wires. It looks like its supposed to be there, no power wires or anything. I was told it would take 2 hours to install. Make sure if you get this though that the program the car for it, some places say it doesn't need it, but if it isn't done, the radio volume settings do not always work properly. The GPS info: getBMWparts.com Item: 1 SERIES NAV KIT COM Price: $319.20 Part Number: 65900440086 That is my story! EDIT: This info. is for a 2008 128i, not sure about others! No problem!
I am going to have the dealer do it I think. I would do it myself, but the car is under warranty and I have been in a situation before where a dealer was like "You changed the radio, I'm not going to replace your control arm"...lol I have not received the unit yet, it is on its way. Once I get it i'll post some picts so you can see it. Im still skeptical that I won't get a $319 brick in a BMW box lol. $319 sounds really cheap. The dealer quoted me $420 for the unit, I got the part number and it was way cheaper on getBMWparts.com. It seems to check out. I guess I'll see soon enough! Im sure the install will cost as much as the GPS..... |

From what I saw, it looks like a bracket connects to the instrument cluster somehow, and there is a flat bundle of wires that has power, audio, and some sort of control interface. As far as the integration, I DO NOT think it uses steering wheel controls, but the audio for calls and navigation will come out of the sound system, and it will automatically lower the volume. There is a specific setting in the radio for volume of GPS.
Once it is here and installed I will give you guys better details, its all a little fuzzy still. I just wish that you could go into the dealer and they actually new what accessories they were selling. It should be like going into an Apple store and buying stuff for your Mac. When ever I have a question, they seem to be limited in what they know about the accessories. Doesn't it make sense to know a lot about all the add ons so you can sell them to people when they buy the car? |

Ok so the GPS arrived. The unit I got DOES NOT integrate with the radio. Then I went on a search with the local dealer to figure it out. The dealer around here has supposedly NEVER gotten a request for any of these units. So here is the one series options broken down and verified:
Portable Navigation System (Part# 65 90 0 440 086) $320 through getbmwparts.com - A rebranded Garmin Navi 360, mounts to a BMW dock that supplies power through custom BMW installation. Has bluetooth phone support / navigation. The unit has a nice loud speaker in it w/ built in mic. The 1 series kit DOES NOT include the dash bracket. This is part number 65 90 0 442 224, it runs between $50-$63. Labor to install this unit is 1.5 Hours. Portable Navigation System Plus- (Part# 65 90 2 156 706) $340 through getbmwparts.com - A rebranded Garmin 760. The 1 series kit DOES NOT include the dash bracket. This is part number 65 90 0 445 989. Has an optional traffic module (part# 65 90 2 149 499) that runs between $96-$120. Portable Navigation System Pro - (Part# 65 90 2 149 503) $553.50 through getbmwparts.com - A rebranded Garmin 880. The 1 series kit DOES NOT include the dash bracket. This is part number 65 90 0 445 989. Here are the pictures of my unit that came Friday (Portable Navigation System (65 90 0 440 086). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have decided to keep the unit as it is loud enough to not really need the car speakers. The phone calls come in loud and clear on it. I will be having it installed next week and will post pictures when its done. Here are some BMW photos of what the install looks like. ![]() ![]() |

Nice things about the unit so far: -Bluetooth pairing easy -Software update works with Windows or Mac! -Has Garmin's "Safe Mode" password protection -US & Europe maps preloaded -has the custom BMW car icons (not really a big deal, but neat) -Has many voices preloaded in a bunch of languages Just waiting for the dealership to get the bracket in and it will be scheduled for the next day! ![]() |

Ok folks, here are pictures of the install. Took them exactly and hour and half to install/test/and clean the car.
Side Note: I went to the dealer at 7am to have it installed. My client advisor was late and the woman that took me decided, even though I was at the dealership first, she would get all her customers in before putting his clients in. So I waited 2 hours before they even took my car into the bay....(#$(@*$(@#$. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Anyways, I made a few calls while using it and the bluetooth works great. I can hear the callers clearly and they don't hear any difference in my voice. Mic has a pretty good range. The speaker has a bit of tinnyness to it, but thats fine. A nice feature is that the ringtone of my iPhone actually comes over the GPS's speaker. And its petty loud, you would't not hear it. The navigation works great, quick re-routing, a bunch of voices in a bunch of languages. The best voice feature is that it tells you what street to turn onto. A nice touch. It also does not cut off any of the windshield view, so that is a big plus in my book! I haven't tried much else on it yet, but I will let you know. Anyone have any questions? |

I will take some more picts when I get home.
There are some wires showing on the back. I had asked them to put heat shrink on them, the woman said they would...but she could care less about my problems. I emailed my actual advisor to see what he can do. ![]() Lessoned learned. If you have a good service advisor, WAIT for him if he's late. I have to say, the guy I have now is really the best advisor I have ever had. Even though its a 1 series, he treats me as if I just drove a new 7 series in. |

It looks nice, but a 360? really? that is at least 4 year old GPS technology. OTOH, that bracket should be compatible with a newer unit.

I just got my 135i convert yesterday. It was a dealer stock here in Hong Kong so no Navi (I don't need anyway), no usb, no bluetooth. I went aftermarket and had the Dension GW500 installed and that worked fine. I think for bluetooth, I may give FISCON BWM pro a try. Here is around US$600 installed and it supposedly behave very similar to the stock bluetooth.......
