DIY: Improved Airflow DCI

I installed the BMS Dual Cone Intake this weekend, and I had a bit of a OCD moment with regards to the direction of the air-flow. So, armed with some long zip ties, I devised this very, very, very simple solution.

I'm also in the market for a DCI(and JB3) but leaning towards the AFE coz of the heat shield. How's the sound difference compared with the stock airbox?

Lol.....you are not the first to do this mod.

I used a coat hanger....ghetto I know!

In regards to air temps.

I have been logging intake temps in 72F weather and find that at constant cruise low throttle around 2-3K rpm my intake temps sit around 89 to 90F.

During WOT my temps drop as low as 86 during a full 3rd gear pull from 3K rpm.

Not bad for a DCI setup.

Even with a cold air intake setup, your ambient air is going to pick up some heat travelling past the turbos.

I had the stock CAI on last week and noted about a 5 degree improvement over the DCI's at times, but the DCI's are less restrictive and have better throttle response.

They also pull a little harder at higher rpms which is where to stock CAI restriction becomes more of an issue.

A CAI might be better at heatsoak recovery though, since you would be pulling in cooler air immediately to help bring the intercooler temp back down.

But I found that I could get my intercooler back down from 106F to 89F just by using half throttle or so for a couple of gears.

The key is to get airflow into the intercooler.





This is with an aftermarket intercooler though.

The sound difference is minor (to me), though you can hear the turbos spooling which some like and some don't. I did it for the extra power.

As far as the heat shield / temp issue, I have a FMIC so it's kinda moot. The people I trust (with data) say that the increased flow outweighs the heat - and the FMIC is more important for hot climates than intake.

I think the AFE looks better, but I didn't think the extra dollars were worth it.

After installing the DCI, OCC and FMIC - I'm done with power modifications. Downpipes and exhaust aren't worth the hassle and if I decide to spend extra money on the car it will be for the suspension.

I have to agree that the AFE looks better but for the price the BMS DCI is a better buy IMO. I disagree that the sound difference is minimal. Especially with a JB3 on you will have a brand new awesome sound you will love, if you want to improve the sound I think the BMS is the best bet at least from what has been reported on this site.

the place youre zip typing onto doesnt look very sturdy....

i got an industrial ziptie and tied the left side of the plenum to the titanium piping on the left cuz it was rubbing my intake
