I'm no domestic fan boy. I've owned imports my whole life. But if this 1M (which I've been waitin for) decides to come in at $45k or more. I'm out of the game to own one. I'll get a used M3 or a new mustang.

This sounds less and less like a truly entry level ///M car, and more like the marketing ploy many have been afraid of since the car became official....

No one at my dealer even knows this car will exist--wouldn't surprise me if I couldn't even get one....which means it will most likely not be worth the effort....guess I will likely pass as well...

I personally think BMW will build as many as it can sell, which is still not much with such a short production run. But I'm hoping at least I can test drive it - otherwise I'll keep the M3 and live happily ever after.

I am certainly not going to pay more than MSRP....
I just went on BMWusa.com and optioned out (read not fully optioned out) a 135i. I LOL-ed here at the office when my price tag came in at $43k
I worry this 1M is going to be over $45k.
I can't stand Ford

but my colleague here at work just purchased a GT w/ the glass roof and the track pack. I had a chance to drive it and it handles just as well as my 2008 Nissan 350z. And as a daily driver it seemed to ride slightly better then my girlfriends 2010 128i. Most likely due to the longer wheelbase. But the fit and finish on the interior is real nice on that damn GT.
Owning a 1M would be wicked. I know, most likely, I would be the only one in my city (Little Rock, AR) w/ one. And considering I see more and more GT's popping up around the road. Standing out would be nice. However I really hope BMW makes the price right.

I dont like what Im reading. "500 units", "market hype", "over MSRP". I hope the folks at BMW are reading this stuff. A hefty price tag on this thing, Id consider a used Cayman S (or M3 if price is right).

Used M3's now in the mid-low $40k's.

I'd hate to sell my trusted M3 to get into a 1M and go back to a used M3 after that, if it doesn't measure up. I'll definitely pull all the strings I can to test drive the 1M properly... I'll even call BMWNA and ask for a press car if the dealer won't satisfy me.

Yes, it's a white fox body Mustang with wheel flares. Somehow the Germans (assuming it's a German backed racer) know how ro make the cars cooler than the Americans do. Most fox bodied "stock" racers that I've seen look "odd" and Piece mealed...that had a slight Porsche look to it, sick and sleek

Wasn't the Merkur the same body as the Ford Cosworth RS?

Its a Ford Sierra XR4i!! Different to the Sierra RS Cosworth, body wise the XR4 had the smaller biplane rear wing and the extra pillar through the rear windows and underneath IIRC a V6 rather than the Cosworth's turbo4.

The Cosworth was the one known more for racing, I've never seen a racing XR4 before.

Maybe that's a sign for all of us right there, the turbo being the better more desirable car of the two ;-)

Right after the white and darkish Ford Sierra was a Fox body Mustang, check it again, I know the headlights, hood, sides and that distinctly side molding on the windows, plus that side shot of the rearend, with wide fender wells...I've seen enough Fox Body Mustang's lights in my rearview and them pulling up to me to know...they almost breed like real horses...

That being said, the Ford Sierra Cosworths really showed how a small engined RWD car could be fun as hell, and so did the RS200 as well. Ummm, is Ford, or did Ford, show BMW how to be the Ultimate Driving Machine?

As I have pointed out elsewhere, 500 units in North America corresponds to 1-2 cars per dealership. It stands to reason that you need to be either #1 or #2 on the waiting list to have a realistic shot at purchasing the car. And you better be prepared for a "market adjustment" premium.

So much for BMW's plan to have younger less affluent customers buying the baby M car.
It'll be definitely not be two years. I'm not sure if we've said that on BimmerFile but I definitely meant to. This will feel a bit more like an event. BTW this is basically what we reported more than a week ago on BF. We'll have more in BimmerCast #30 tomorrow.

Gabe - Do you agree that people with serious interest should put a deposit down now if they want a reasonable shot at purchasing? Do you have a deposit down? One or two cars per dealership is pretty limited.

Yes. I've had mine down for at least six months now (and I'm not even sure if I'm buying one yet).

Thanks for the info--we appreciate it.

I wonder, as others on here have, if this car will end up being like the ///M coupe of a few years ago...there were plenty of those to go around, and you could actually get a great deal on one...

I think my dad was able to get somewhere in the neighborhood of 13K off sticker....or something to that effect, on his 2007 M coupe....

I was alluding to the current 5.0...but, using the Fox body as throwback, you may not like them, but they are endlessly tuneable and have untold mods. I respect Ford for what it has done. And let's be fair, Ford is repsonsible for Aston Martin's turn around, their V12s, V8s, Jag's current offerings, Volvo as well. They helped fund the XJ220 (yes it has a Renault V6)...and Ford-Cosworth was a beast back in the day. And then when they couldn't buy Ferrari, they beat them with the Daytona Coupe, got with Dallara, Shelby, and a English firm and produced the GT40, and Ford has more Le Man's victories than BMW.

If Ford really wanted to, they possibly could have Ford of Europe design a Mustang to enter in DTM, possibly do very well. Since I don't know the rules, they may allow a car without IRS to have a special track IRS.

You mean Porsche, followed by Audi.

Not even sure if Ford is a distant 3rd - they won LeMans outright what, 2 or 3 times?

I was saying individual cars (and yes I know the R8 R10 and 917) I also said most.

And the gt40 won four years in a row (66,67,68,69) that's damned impressive by anybody's standards

I was referring to the comment about the cars in the video. I was comparing BMW makes in that series (touring cars) to the comment about who really came up with "ultimate driving machine". That would be the E30 M3. Don't even compare the ford of that era to the E30 M3 success.

Nah they have bmw secret service for that, he'd have been dead before his fingers even touched the thing.

And honestly, the hood looks exactly the same as my 135's

I was at BMWs test facility in France yesterday and saw the 1M in person. There is no hood bulge. This may change for production, but as of the moment there is none.
