Scratched NAV screen

So, my teen drives our 135 vert to movies and one of his friends puts big finger smudge on NAV screen. I try to clean it and notice a several scratches underneath the smudge. Using a wet tissue paper to clean the screen, I put even more hairline horizontal scratches in surface!

Ughh!

Is this permanent?

This happened to me as well. I found out that you can fix this by using a pencil eraser! First clean the screen with a clean damp cloth. With the eraser go back and forth in the same direction of the scratch. After a few swipes with the eraser wipe it down with the clean damp cloth and repeat until the scratch disappears. Important make sure you use a new eraser or make sure there is no lead on it. I have yet to do this as I don't have the time but will most likely attempt this on the weekend.

Assuming this works I almost want to get some type of protective film for it but not sure how that will effect the "look" of display. Anyone have a recommendation that has worked for them?

NOOOOOOOOOOOO..!!

IT DOESN'T WORK!! I tried it and put new scratches on my screen!

We have new erasers out of the box. I tried a red one and worked a few strokes on the left side of the screen and ended up creating more scratches!!

This does not work and now I have more problem than when I started!

that sucks dude.

from what I have read in the past, the glass isnt scratched, it's the anti-glare coating that is scratched....
maybe there is a way to remove all the antiglare coating, and to put your own protective film over it.

i personally use brillo and battery acid to rid my screen of imperfections. (joking)

That makes sence about the anti glare coating. The eraser method I found was for computer monitors and LCD tv's and I'm thinking they do not have that coating. Glad you mention it!

Found this DIY which is most likely what is happening.

Ouch, I hope you can get it fixed. Worst case scenario: a new nav screen is ~$1700.

I have done a complete search in regardes to scratched Navi screens in all the other bmw forums and the only thing I can find is a old post from EAS that sold a screen protector. I messaged them and they don't carry it anymore and he couldn't tell me the manufacture because the guy that use to handle that does not work there anymore. Has anyone here put there own screen protector on? I was going to try this but the only issue I have is the type of screen protector to use? What would a screen protector do to the the anti glare coating that is already on the screen?
