Got a ticket - BMW 1 Series Coupe Forum / 1 Series Convertible Forum (1M / tii / 135i / 128i / Coupe / Cabrio / Hatchback) (BMW E82 E88 128i 130i 135i)

Driving in a group of 5 cars all doing 80 on RT 17/I-86 and we all crest a hill and cop is sitting with a gun so we all slow down.

He pulls off and paces our group...which is doing 65 now, for about 2 miles and then slices into the group and only pulls me over.

The convo lasted 30 seconds...

Cop: When was the last time you were pulled over. (seriously hes assuming ive been pulled over before?)

Me: A year and a half ago I changed lanes without using a blinker.

Cop: Where are you going?

Me: Im going back home to New York. My parents are moving and im helping them pack up on weekends.

Cop: Where are you comming from?

Me: Syracuse I go to college up there.

Cop: Are you aware of the speed limit here.

Me: Its 65 mph.

Cop: No its 55 here (I honestly did think it was 65 but I was apparently in a 10 miles stretch of 55 in the middle of the mountains but whatever)

Cop: Are you aware of how fast you going.

Me: I was pacing traffic.

Cop: No you were passing them thats why I pulled you over (seriously?)

Then he takes my papers back to his car and he comes back with an 82 in a 55 tickets and then tells me to slow down.

I hate Stateies with a passion. Im pretty sure that I got pulled over cause im driving a nice car.

And the worst part is we come off the shoulder and 10 seconds later an old civic come barreling by at over 85 almost hits me and swerves to avoid the cop and he does nothing about it?

WTF!?

The only good news is it happened in a backwoods county with no money so maybe I can get out without a big points hit

If you are sure you were pasting with the traffic then fight it and ask for the "DATA he collected".(speed at that instance.)

cant ask for anything. They wont give it to you in New York

similar thing happened to me 2 years ago. I was driving in some FM road between College Station and San Marcos. I had cruise control going 70(the speed limit), my radar goes off so i just hang in there. Right as a cop drives going the other way, some redneck driving some beat up truck fly pass me, so i moved over to the right lane to let the cop pass who immediately turned around. drives right next to me then hits the breaks and lights up behind me, pulls me over.
So the cop comes up to the window:
cop: do you know how fast you where going?

me: yeah i was on cruise control going 70
cop: no i clocked you going 81

me: sorry officer i think you mistaken me for the white truck that passed me as you came by.

cop: well i saw you talking on the phone, you might have not been aware of your speed.

me: pardon me officer, but as i said i was on cruise control and also my car has bluetooth connected, i have no need to have my phone up to my ear.

he looks at me confused and walks away comes back 15min later with my ticket.

clearly he saw that i was some young guy in a bimmer and pulled me over insted

In South Florida it's varied. The coastal departments are filthy rich, they all run Laser traps, well disguised cars (even foreign ones) - and they're generally miserable. The inland departments are less prevalent, and on the highways they'll usually ignore you, except FHP - stateies are unreal.

It was in the 55 section by the log homes store.

It was that part after that thats marked at 55 but is pure highway in Delaware County.

I was guessing you were going to say that actually. Whenever I get into that neck of the woods, I always go about 5 under cause there is always someone pulled over in that speed zone.

Years ago, I crested a hill in my MR2 Spyder, only to see a cop with a radar gun at the bottom of the hill. But at the same time, a Camaro a Camaro passed me on the left lane. But who gets pulled over? Me. I said to the cop, "are you sure that wasn't the Camaro's speed you read?" She said "No, you were the only one in the beam. He passed you."

Sucks about the ticket.

But I'm confused. you said in the first post you were doing 80mph... Then you say he paced you. Then it was a radar gun. I got one speeding ticket in NJ years ago, and he wrote "PACE" on it.

I would assume 80 in a 55 is enough of a reason to bang you out.

(If I am reading this wrong, my bad)

Its not the speed. Its that he pulled into a group of cars all doing the same speed in order to single me out.

Being that you live in NY that sucks most cases are that you are going to get points. 3 im pretty sure. I got a ticket a few years ago going to a football game. However, if you live out of state that’s a whole nother story. I actually picked my 135 up in Boston (I live on Long Island NY) I rented a car to drive up there so i could drive the 135 home. Well just as I get in MA I get pulled over doing 86 in a 65. I pull over after about 5 mins of the cop following me with his lights one... Just because. And the dialog is below:
Cop: You know why I’m pulling you over?
Me: Nope
Cop: You were speeding
Me: Ok
Cop: You know how fast you were going?
Me: Nope
Cop: You were doing 86 in a 65
Me: Ok
Cop: License and Reg
Me: Its a rental
Cop: So what, you should still have a reg!
Me: Grabbing the Hertz packet.. Its probably in there you can look for it

Cop: Hands it back and takes my license, writes me a ticket.
Me: You have a great day! Your doing a great job!

Moral of the story, staties are assholes no matter where you are. If you’re out of state, do what you can to annoy them. It made my day haha

Shit happens dude. I got pulled over for going 85 in a 55 when my cruise control was set at 60. The best part? The cop was pacing me for about a mile and he said he caught me going 85 when he was behind me. I fail to see how that was even remotely possible. I hadn't even touched my gas pedal. Some cops are just power hungry dick heads. He let me go, but only after giving me a warning, so I guess I got kind of lucky (if you can even call it that). Was on 17-S in Jersey on my way home from school too.

I also got pulled over for Tailgating when I had to slow down quickly after the car in front of me did the same thing. How the hell am I supposed to avoid that? =/ It wasn't even that bad either. The tires didn't squeal at all.

I got pulled over earlier this year for 5 mph over. There was a Grand Prix passing me at about 10-15 mph over. I got pulled over. I asked him why he didn't pull over the Grand Prix and he said the radar got me. He told me he was going to give me a ticket. So then I asked him if he pulled more over because of my car. He said no, but it is a nice car. It was $10, no points.

I knew if I got him to admit that he pulled me over because of my car I had an out. I also knew that since I was already getting the ticket, it wouldn't hurt to ask!
