Thumbs up E82 135i is Drive's Car of the Year (Best Performance Car Over $60K AUD)

Australian automotive publication "Drive" has named the winners of its 2010 Cary of the Year awards and the E82 135i has won for the Best Performance Car Over $60k AUD category over the 911 Turbo, Audi RS5, and FPV GT.

Full review and video - http://news.drive.com.au/drive/car-o...118-17yzh.html

Some notable excerpts:

Quote:
In 2010, it's the turn of Ford's premier Falcon, the GT, to uphold the lucky country's performance honour - this time against three Teutonic two-doors: Audi's new RS5, the latest version of Porsche's everday supercar, the 911 Turbo, and the incumbent title holder, BMW's 135i Coupe.
Quote:
BMW's 135i Coupe sits at the other end of the pricing spectrum in this group, though our optioned-up test car would still set buyers back $82,055 for a car that is smaller than a Mazda3.

As one judge remarked, however, the 135i is "expensive for a car of its size but cheap for a car of its performance".

Unlike the new 5-Series 35i models, the 135i sticks with the older 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with two turbos rather than one. With the same 225kW and 400Nm to propel a 1455kg body, though, the baby BMW has supreme pulling power through its seven gears - allowing it to take the silver medal in the sprint to 400 metres.

The snarling engine begs to be revved hard, with super-quick shifts courtesy of the new paddle levers and dual-clutch auto that are new to the model this year.

Strong, consistent brakes and steering that is arguably the best in the BMW world also contributed to making the 135i a pocket dynamite on both road and track.

The BMW doesn't smooth out every bump on the road and its interior has plenty of hard plastics, but these are merely minor blemishes on a sports car that nails the criteria and stands out for a third successive year at Drive Car of the Year.

Good article, but I thought DCT only came with the N55? The article states it's the N54 with DCT?

Different for non-US spec cars

Actually the article is incorrect. The DCT was available on the 335i with the N54 engine in Australia but the 135i with DCT only became available with the N55 update.

They just drive 'em and forget 'em. They don't hang around long enough when they break and have to fix 'em.

I take that "car of the year" stuff with a big grain of NaCl.

This comparo was based mostly on a performance per dollar level only it seems. They didn't compare/care about other aspects of each car.

What the hell kind of comparison was that? Seemed more like one of those test questions, "which of the following does not belong with the others: 135i, Falcon, RS5, 911 Turbo"

WOW, even I could get that one - it's FALCON - because it has no numbers in the name......

FYI, The award has certain criteria that must be met for a car to be eligible for the award, such as a minimum sales volume per annum (some estimates are made as a result of the timings of the award), and that the car must be a "new" (more criteria is used for this assesment) model that is significantly different to the previous years car or a totally new model from the manufacturer. The 135i, I believe, qualifies as it was the previous years winner.

Next year will be fun, throw in the 1M and RS3 and things will get interesting me thinks.

It would be funny if the 135i and 1M were both nominated and they 135i won again Don't see that happening though lol
