Engine wear from mods
I'm fairly new to the forum. I'm a self confessed novice when it comes to the general workings of a car. What I mean is that I'm not the type of person that can do my own work on a vehicle further than changing a tire or the oil. Owning/Leasing BMW's, I don't even do those things. That's what the free service and BMW assist buttons are for, right?
I've been a reader of the forum, but haven't commented or questioned before. So here are my questions for you guys, the experts in this area: I'm torn between leasing a new 135 in September (I currently lease a Z4), or buying a low mile 1 or 2 year old 135, a 2 or 3 year old 335, or a M3 that is several years old. Basically, if I buy, I want the sales price less than 40k. I'm leaning towards the slightly used 135. I like to drive in road rallies and would like to be able to modify the car's looks a little and have really thought of taking it to a Dinan shop and put the Stage 2 system on the car. I can't do that if I lease a 135. If you guys were in my shoes, what would you buy? I know I'm in the 1 series forum and the answers might be a bit biased, but since I'm leaning in the direction of the 135, I thought I should post my question here. Question 2: Whatever I buy will be a daily driver. Will adding a Dinan system to a daily driver hurt the vehicle? Will a Dinan system affect the gas mileage very much? I wouldn't want to shorten the life of a good engine to add HP that I'll actually use to hotrod on a few occasions only. Thanks to everyone for reading my post. I love my Z4, X3 |

If your budget is around 40k you could get a low mileage 135, and still have money left over for some nice mods. If you stick with bmw approved mods like the power performance kit, your warranty stays intact for the remainder of 4yrs 50k miles. It won't give you as much power as the dinan stage 2, but it's probably safer if you plan on keeping the car for a while and you're concerned about engine wear.

I bought (not leased) my 2011 135i with the M Sport package, heated seats, and premium sound for less than $40K out the door. It had eleven miles on the ODO. Depending on the options you want, it's possible to get a new 135 for under $40k.

Thanks
Thanks for the replies so far. I appreciate it very much.
Is the Opinion what I suspect that the Dinan mods will typically have an affect of a shortened engine life? I know they will match the 4 yr/50k mile warranty from the factory. I have not looked into the BMW Performance Mods yet. Now you guys are throwing in the possibility of a new 135 purchase. I like the changes on the '12 models, too. |

Hard to say. The article on the front page about the guy in UK tearing down his 50k mile N54 was interesting. His had an ungodly amount of wear and carbon buildup for an engine with that kind of milage, but it sounds like he had his modded to the max (500+ hp) with heavy boost and lot's a track abuse. Interestingly his engine had an oil catch can installed for 40 of those 50k miles and the intake valves were still gunked beyond belief.
