Here it is, the all new BMW 1M, in Vallencia Orange and the first in the flesh photos. The official press conference hasn't yet taken place, but the covers on this car were drawn back and everyone was allowed to take photos of the car.

The first words I can use to describe this car are: Its amazing

In fact, almost everyone who is walking by the stand right now has to stop, take a turn and look at the car. In a car show filled with some truly exotic machinery, that says alot.

Going a little deeper, its obvious the first thing anyone notices is the paintwork. The Vallencia Orange is a color that cannot be properly captured in pictures. In photos it always seemed like a dull version of the Fire Orange seen on the M3 GTS. In person, you can see this is a truly metallic color, with the best analogy being Black Sapphire Metallic vs. Jet Black. The metallic bits give the color alot of depth and an almost chamelion effect to the car, meaning the hue actually changes somewhat depending on what angle or lighting you are looking at it from.

As for the much maligned ride height and wheel gap. I know alot of people are complaining about this, and have gone to great photoshop'd lengths to reduce the wheel gap. I can tell you, that like with many BMWs, the degree to which the car stands is really exagerated in photos. In person, I never got the sense that the car was riding too tall on its suspension. The cars stance seems perfectly normal. I'm sure people will still want to lower it, but I can confirm that in its stock form, the stance is perfectly sporty looking and lower and more aggressive looking then a standard BMW.

Looks wise, the car is truly menacing to see in person. The wide stance relative to a standard 1-Series is the first thing one notices (after the shiny orange paintwork that is!). Looking further you see the angry cowl of the new M specific front bumper and revised LCI headlamps with integrated "eyebrows" gives a truly angry and mean M face to the car.

What I really love about this car, is that it doesnt follow the lazy path that you see with alot of other car makers. What I mean is that there isn't an overdone front end with no balance to the rear. This car gets wider at the rear then the front and has enough stylistic bits to make the back just as butch as the front, with an overall balanced and sporty look to the car.

This is the car that BMW is using to spread its wings to the younger generation of buyers, as that has become a real priority with Dr. Kay Segler, head of the BMW M brand. The car should satisfy nicely, what with its 340HP N54 based engine that keeps 332lb-ft of torque on the ready, with styling to match the power, or power to match the styling, however you like it!

These pics look amazing. I really like what BMW have done with the body kit. I'm really digging the front end, it looks a lot more aggressive. I wonder how long it will take for companies to make 1M replica bumpers? Also, I think they should have dropped the height 20mm or so, otherwise it looks great. Shame the exhaust isn't a true quad and it's only for aesthetics though.

Really wish BMW would just bring all 3 colors to one show and put the side by side. I haven't even seen a Black one yet other than photoshopped ones.

But it does look Better than anyother VO painted ones. Good job with the pictures!

WANT. these pictures confirm that Valencia orange is the best. Generally when you buy an attention-whore color such as orange you are considered an asshole, but I wouldn't care about the perception

Love it! Still waiting on the price announcement but I'm close to taking one in white. The orange is a little too loud but it suits the curves well. If only there was a blue option....

I like the shape, but that front air dam bothers me a bit. Other than that, it looks good for a 1er. I wish they would have done this with the 5 door and brought it over here.

Today I learned:

1) The quad exhaust is connected to its canister by a single pipe.
2) The rear air curtains are faux.
3) The 1M's interior is sportier than probably any BMW's.

AWESOME, made me smile that there's one stateside finally. I'm tempted to book a trip up there just to go see it in person but it's so darned cold!

Looking forward to seeing one in black. Orange might be a bit much for me. Maybe I'll get the orange and wrap it in matte black vinyl, then when I get tired of that I'll switch back to the orange? I'm currently in the process of wrapping my '91 318i and it's looking pretty sweet.

Would have been sick in frozen grey or frozen black...
