So it finally happened

I start my car this morning and get a lot of irregular idling but then it clears up. As I start driving, the car just feels strange, almost like I'm towing an 18-wheeler. Significant power loss, very poor throttle response. HPFP is my guess. By afternoon, the performance improved but not to the same level. I already have an appointment with the service tomorrow morning. I didnt get any warning lights. But my service guy said that the car goes into sort of protection mode. Anybody else had a "soft" hpfp fail? I'll know more tomorrow about the extent: hpfp, injectors, what else? Just wanted to share

Had this a few times. After ignoring it, I started getting limp modes on the highway, that's when I booked an appointment and it was indeed the HPFP. Replaced it and the car is fine... until this one fails.

I live in fear, everytime I start my car I think about it. My car has 33k miles on the stock hpfp.

Ivan, what mileage did you make it to?

As a side note, I work in an office with 4 other N54 powered cars and have 2 other friends with the N54 in their cars. Literally every single one of them has had the HPFP fail and replaced, myself included.

Ivan,

Have you done the recall to get the latest version of the fuel pump installed. I'm hoping they are now doing the recall because they believe they have finally fixed the pump problem. I'm interested in knowing if anyone with the new pump has had a failure.

I made it to 20500 miles. Kind of funny: Just yesterday I made an observation how great the car runs! Not today...

same deal here, decreased power without a cel or 1/2 engine light.

then finally a full blown failure with a car that would barely idle and couldn't make my driveway. rollback to bmw with hpfp.

started at 8500, finished at like 13k (oh and it went in twice during this time and checked out fine each time. the car actually seemed more powerful and much smoother after the new pump)

No, I havent had a recall done. I did take it in once for long crank problem. All they did was a software update. this time I'll insist on pump replacement. I just dont want to go back every other week.

Update

Got the car back. New pump installed. Runs much smoother and seems to be more powerful than before.
