Exclamation BMW approved motor oils... aka THE LIST!!!

BMW approved engine oil list! THE LIST!

I got this official BMW list of approved motor oils - from my local dealer.

IF your fuel is low (to none) sulfur (sulphur) you need to use LL-4. IF your fuel has high sulfur you need to use LL-1.

Basically if you live in the EU (plus Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein) – you should use a LL-4 type oil.

IF you live in the USA/Canada… you should use a LL-1 type oil.

Additionally any LL-1 or LL-4 oil shall have an API SM rating or higher.

Bellow is THE LIST of oils that BMW has approved for use in their engines. IF you don’t see your motor oil listed here… BMW says not to use it. Period.

Dackel.

BMW engine code and oil LL type codes…

NOTE:

The BMW oil 0w40 part #83210398504 is a full synthetic oil.
The BMW oil 5w30 part #83210398507 is NOT a synthetic oil!

BMW part numbers for LL-4 & LL-1 oils and THE LIST…

Sweet info Dackel.

I wonder if they provide this info if you do Euro delivery or if a behind the scenes oil change happens since BMW knows you'll be using both types of fuel. Yeah right.

^^Naa I don't think so either. lol

What I did find surprising was that foot note #3). That BMW uses the regular non synthetic oil as a factory fill oil on the M motors. Then at the first service (@2K kms) they switch over to the 10w60 full synthetic oil.

I think if you go to a US Dealer they can also look up this SBS oil tech data in the BMW pc system.

The main thing is to make sure is that your Castrol Edge oil is LL-1 rated and has atleast an API SM rating on the bottle. Otherwise do not use it. There are NINE Castrol oils listed on that sheet.

No its just the 5w30 API service SM/CF. I dont see anywhere on the label about LL-1 rated. I have not used it yet, its just sitting in the garage.

Than it is not LL-1 rated, and not suitable for use in our cars.

That's "Syntec". Edge is not the same and I would not use it.

I just changed my 1200 mile change yesterday with Mobil 1 0W40 "European Car Formula", which is commonly available off the shelf at Wally World and is LL-01 rated.

Castrol Syntec 0W30 ("German Castrol") is the other LL-01 commonly found on the shelf at Autozone.

This List is for LL-4 oils. LL-4 is for EU gas with no to little sulfur.

I am sure IF someone were to ask a BMW dealer in the US to pull up this list... BMW NA probably has a LL-1 list like this.

I would also think IF an oil meets LL-4 specs... it might also meet LL-1 specs. But you really need to read the particular oil bottle label.

I found this doc (it's older and I imagine there is a newer one floating around) as well poking around trying to find the differences between Longlife 01 and 04.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/pdfs/BMW-O...s-and-Recs.pdf

I've been using Mobile-1 0w40 LL-01 and will continue doing so since I can get it so much cheaper then the LL-04 from the dealer. I really see no reason to use the LL-04 over the LL-01 and would need to switch to an LL-01 anyway before I could ship my vehicle back to the U.S. I imagine BMW specs LL-04 in Europe so the dealers only have to carry one type of oil even though it's really only needed for the diesels with the DPF.

Dackel,

Do you know if the gas available on US military bases in Europe is the same as US gas or is it low sulfur Euro gas? I just had an oil change with LL04 but mostly use gas on base...

I think it depends on each country.

In Italy they use Agip.

In Germany, the gas sold on Base is delivered thru an Esso supplier. That doesn't really mean it is an Esso gasoline and additive package.

I prefer to buy my gas from the local Esso station down the street (1 km) for a few reasons. I feel that the fuel sold at Esso off post is of a higher quality. Better pumps, better filters and additive package - and better upkeep on their pumps. Plus on my base they/we only sell (one) Super grade. The TUV inspects the Esso gas station. On base they do not have ANY compliance inspections. TUV test every gas station for volume and sulfur content. There are TUV decals with the inspection date stamped on each pump at the German Esso's. No inspection on base gas pumps!

I drive down the street to Esso gas station and tank with SuperPlus 98 octane gas.

IF you are stationed over here... I would highly suggest for you to try using either the Castrol sold via your BMW dealer or use Castrol's Edge RS 0w40 LL-4 oil. The engine really runs soooo much smoother (& cooler!) with this stuff vs the Mobil-1 0w40 LL1 oil. I always used M1 oil in my past cars... but I bit the bullet for one oil change and I will not go back to M1. The Castrol is that good. I can get the GC for 10 euros per liter with a VAT form.

Btw... in Germany they are switching over to Bio gasoline (E10) Ethonal with 10%. This is bad news! All super grade gasolines will have more ethonal blended into the gas. ONLY SuperPlus will remain "pure" gasoline. At the Esson in BA I know they will be closed tomorrow and Thursday for new pumps to be installed. Bio gas will be phased in all over Germany in this month of Feb, 2011.

I'm in Spain - we don't have the VAT forms unfortunately (actually the tax is called IVA here, but it translates the same). My oil change was at the dealer, so they used the BMW/Castrol 5W30. It cost almost 30 Euros/liter + 18% IVA! Labor was only 13 Euros, but 6.5 Liters of oil at these prices is insane.

I probably should get my gas off base, but I don't know very much about the quality of the gas here to know if it's worth the inconvenience and expense to go off base. We have special gas cards where we can buy Cepsa gas at cost (instead of at retail prices), so it's actually not too bad.

Ohh... Don't you guy's in Spain use gas coupons? In most EU countries where the US forces are... they either use paper coupons or an electronic card. This allows you to buy gas on the economy at US military discounted prices.

Here in Germany, we have an electronic Esso card. We pay about $0.95 per liter USd. (the price changes every week) It does not matter IF we go to an Esso, off post (any Esso in Germany) or pump gas on base. The electornic card tracks how much we can purchase. We are limited to 400 liters per month per car. But we still have to pay for that gas - but it is at US Military prices - NOT EUROS!

So when I fill my tank at the Esso... say 48 liters... the German price is 1.55 euros per liter. That would normally cost 75 euros. But I use the Esso card to pay and it charges me roughly $46 for that sale.

We use to have paper coupons but there was too much of a black market going on with them. Germany was teh first to switch over to a electronic card. I think Netherlands also uses a card. Italy still uses paper coupns.

Btw... the OE oil at the BMW Zentrum/dealers over here is about 23 euros per liter. Yea... they charge you for seven liters. Your labor rate is darn cheap. I was charges 60 euros just for that same oil change labor! The BMW dealers over here get 110 euros per hour.

I think I would buy the oil in the states and have it sent to someone there. Then have a friend mail it over here to your APO.

I'm a little confused by all these threads about finding an alternative oil. Fisher sells an oil change kit (delivered) for $65. If you price an OEM filter and one of the recommended "alternative" oils, it seems to me that Fisher is selling the BMW parts for less than you can buy this items in stores.
Why would you want to bother finding alternates when you can buy the BMW products for less - am I missing something?

+1. Exactly!

But... some people prefer to use a different oil. I think it is wise just to run what BMW says to use - ie; BMW oil made for them by Castrol.

I guess "I have to have a choice" still rules . But, most entries on this forum talk about how you should use BMW parts and how expensive they are. This is one area where the BMW parts is less.
(For non-racers, other than anedotal statements, can anyone really prove that any modern, major brand of synthetic oil is better than another? Hopefully BMW has done this analysis to prove that their oil is "at least as good as any other". When is the last time anyone has had an internal engine failure that can be traced to using an "inferior" oil - I would guess never?)

Disclaimer - Just like BMW's "lifetime fills" are generally thought of as 100,000 miles, these statements are directed at the 100,000 mile car, because I think 95+% of owners don't keep their cars over this mileage. For those who do - use your own judgement.
