BMW has always prided itself on being a progressive and leading edge company so it's no surprise that the company has taken quickly and often to social networking. Their latest project shows just how serious they consider social networking. BMW will be utilizing Facebook and BMW fans to help create a special 1-series Facebook Edition Model (page located here) for production.

The Facebook 1-series will be designed by young BMW designers and BMW fans will vote and decide on the design to be featured on the production model. There are 16 look combinations to choose from on the BMW 1-series Facebook Page. The design will be applied to the Facebook 1-series edition by use of 3M vinyl wrap. Two models will be offered - 4-cylinder diesel model (122hp or 143hp) and a 6-cylinder petrol model (230hp).

These special Facebook 1-series models will be available only in the Italian market. Vote for the design at http://apps.facebook.com/bmwedizione/

So the Germans are turning to the Italians for design help finally. Maybe they need to outsource design to Pinaferinna.

I'd say the 1 series needs all the help it can get to promote sales in the Italian market. Have a look at the the Alfa Romeo Giulietta that it competes with .... BMW wouldn't stand a chance for my money.

alpha may come to US. I agree they are very nicely styled and unique, however don't have the interior luxuries of the BMW

Alfa Romeo returned to Australia some 12 years ago and while they are still a niche supplier and not as mainsteam as BMW here, I can assure you there interior luxury and styling walks over BMW any day. BMW can only dream of using leather so supple. I purchased the 156 model with Selespeed transmission (like BMW SMG at the time) back in 2001 and kept it for 5 years. Absolutly loved that car. The only thing letting down the Alfa name in this country is the importer and it's dealer network which is nowhere as good as BMW. When that gets fixed, I'd go back for another.

+1

Alfas are generally beautiful cars, inside and out.

I got kind of tired of the Giuletta during World Cup, though - it seemed every other ad was that one with Uma Thurman ominously tearing down the road in one...not sure if it was shown anywhere else?

EDIT: This commercial (
). I think there is a longer one, and you can probably find it in english as well. Anyway, I always think it's funny when I see US actors hawking products on TV in other countries.

Sounds like a marketing campaign designed to keep interest in the E87 1 series up just before the F20 takes over later this year.
