Summer Tires 225/40/18 & 255/35/18

I want good price, good tread life and decent grip in wet weather too. Going on the CS7's I'm getting in the group buy. No RFTs!

Trying to decide between the following:
Continental DW
Bridgestone RE760
Yokohama S.Drive (bad reviews on Tirerack site?)

Don't want to pay more than what the Continentals go for. What's the tread life like on the DWs?

Mainly commuting and a bit more spirited driving on weekends, no track days... yet

I am just about to place an order for either Dunlop Direzza Star Spec Z1's or Michelin Super Sports.

Will flip a coin tomorrow and place the order

I personally have the RE760s but have not installed them yet.

The 760's are great. I used them for a few years and liked them a lot. They will wear longer than the DW's but they won't have as much grip. The DW will be great for performance and handling but they will wear quickly when compared to the RE760.

^ What Gill said. Since you're not going to be tracking or racing as much and you want something with good performance but for everyday/spirited driving, a good balance between performance in wet/dry and wear is an important consideration. RE760's look good!

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Two questions:

1) With the DW's what is the average tread life? Would 20,000 Km's be reasonable?
2) I'm concerned about the weight of the RE760's, how does this affect things like fuel economy and general performance? Is it THAT big a difference?

I chose the DWs and am happy with them. The weight of the tire is a small consideration in the grand scheme of things IMO. I would think the rear tires will go 20K Km with a 340 wear rating, and the fronts even longer. The DW is in the max performance class while the 760 is an ultra high performance tire. The 760 doesn't seem to have quite the wet grip like the DWs however according to TR's testing.

I think these are the exact sizes I'll be getting whenever VMR sends me the rest of my wheels, so I'm interested in this as well. Seems like everyone is recommending the Bridgestones.

EDIT: With 18x9.5 rears, which would be better? 245/35/18's or 255/35/18's???

I wouldn't go smaller than 255's for the rears. There seems to be a consensus that 225/255 18's are the way to go

I just got my wife's v710s in the mail with 255's in the rear and I can't imagine going with anything smaller! The lip sticks out past the sidewall even with a 255.

YuP! I am really happy with the 225/255 setup.

Sylon, I think with even wider wheels(then OE) you might want to go even wider tires. Maybe 235/265's. ???

I dont want a meaty tire look. I also dont want to be stretching tires like crazy either. I want to find that happy, and safe medium.

I got the bridgestone 760's recently and they provide great grip for my 128i that I use for my DD as well as some spirited weekend driving. I was considering the conti's, but what turned me away from them was the tread life and the fact that they are on backorder.

Maxnix, more than anything the tires on my stock rims were done so I couldn't wait until the middle of summer for a set of tires. And no I do not have the sport suspension, I bought my car used in stl. Why do you ask?

I think I'll go with RE760's, the DW's were my forerunners until I found about about the narrow treadwidth. Then they ran out of stock!
