Fifty3bags 135i Build

I'll get this started and continually add to it when I get new parts for it.

This is my second 135i since April 2013. I bought a 2010 135i Jet Black with black leatherette and steptronic with paddle shifters. This being my only car, I wanted a manual and was dying for some red or terracotta leather seats. Then in late July I came across the 135i I have now.

It's a 2010 135i Alpine White on Coral Red leather with the 6-speed manual transmission and N54 engine. I kept the Rieger diffuser I bought for the black 135i, and put it on. The car already had a carbon fiber trunk spoiler installed, other than that it is stock as can be.

Here is the Black 135i:

A comparison of the two:

Some photos about 10 minutes after purchase:

A couple weeks ago the car had to be dropped at Nalley BMW in Atlanta, and my experience there was great. After new injectors, new spark plugs, oil change, and air filter change they 'shipped' it back to me about 200 miles from Atlanta. I was so happy to be able to return the rental and drive my car again.

That pretty much brings us to where I am now with the car. For this build I will be going for looks first and performance later. I don't have the intention to track this car, so upgrades over stock at this point is not needed. I purchased a set of Megan Racing coilovers and am waiting to install them, I will be writing a review of them since most people say to stay away on BMW forums. My first impression is they are very well built, and they have features that I was looking for. 32-way dampening adjustment, built in camber plates, and ride height adjustability.

My brother was having a shoot done of his car from high school by a local photographer that shoots for canibeat.com. He asked me to help out and took a few shots of my car for helping and they came out great!

Please do not quote the pictures, it just makes the thread cluttered.

So, some work happened this weekend. My brother let me borrow his 2-post lift to install my coilovers. Here's my car on the lift and his shop.

On the ground checking the ride height, seeing if I want to adjust the height any more.

Got it home and washed it, needed a wash very bad.

Needs some spacers, but hopefully I'll be buying wheels soon so I'm going to leave it as is. This isn't the final ride height, I'll be going lower when I get wheels.

Also, the coilover install went well, had a few hiccups but nothing too major. The ride is good, they are a somewhat stiffer than the stock suspension. I really like the ride so far, but I've only driven on them two days so far. I am hoping that when I get rid of the RFT's that it will soften it up a bit.

Oh, I almost forgot. I tried on the CCW's from the red ZR1 that was in the shop and they fit surprisingly well (higher offsets, he is running spacers on the ZR1). I didn't measure the wheels but I believe they are 18x10.5 on the rear, and had 285/35R18 tires on them. I looked underneath at the clearance and I had plenty of clearance between the wheel/tire and shock to go wider. The fronts are 17's, not sure of the width

This is rolling out of the shop, tucking 285's

I don't know the exact specs, they're my brother's wheels off of his corvette. The fronts are 17's, unsure of width and offset and tire size. The rears are 18's width is either 10 or 10.5, unsure of offset, tire size is 285/35R18

So far they're good. Definitely more stiff, and there is a good bit of road noise. I still have the trunk liners out, and am planning to cut a hole in each side to access the dampening adjustment knob without having to remove the liners every time. I'm trying to come up with ideas to cover the holes when I do cut them, haven't looked into it much though. Also, I still have RFTs on so when those get replaced the road noise should be cut down significantly. I'll add more reviews of them as time goes on and more miles are added.

That's what was done to my car. make a square shaped hole but leave one side still connected, you can flip it out of the way or on/off and it's pretty stealth.

Yeah, I was thinking of doing that or getting black covers that pop into place like the rubber covers that are beneath the liners. Only problem I can think of with cutting them and having them flap is they won't always sit flush, will they? Or is the material stiff enough to allow it to return to the shape it started out with before flipping it up?

the material is pretty damn stiff. So stiff that I get cuts from it when I do adjust my suspension. I'll snap a picture and post up later

Thanks for your help through PM! I ended up not needing to space out my strut bar, the adjustment knob sits under it and I'm still able to adjust them.

Install was very easy, ran into a few snags. Mainly the passenger rear strut, I think the previous owner had lowered the car before and overtightened the top nut. So when trying to remove the passenger shock, the allen head snapped off the top of the shaft and we had to clamp some vice-grips on the shaft and let the nut soak in PB Blaster while we attempted the driver's side. We were finally able to get it off with that method, unfortunate but we had to do it.

Also, adjusting the rear coil collars is a real PITA

gald i could help, after looking at the pics you post of the coilovers i figured you wouldnt need to adjust add any washers. it seems pretty flush on top. As for adjusting the rear it is a PITA lol.

Thanks Venom! I'll most likely do this for now. I want to eventually do a cover like stated before, but this leaves a clean look. Plus I'm tired of looking in my trunk and seeing that ugly sound deadening stuff lol

Yeah, they are. I put them on and from looking at other Megan Racing coils it seems they go lower than most other coils for their respective make/model vehicle so I left them adjusted pretty high. After we lowered it down I wanted to go about 2" lower than where it sat (it was only about 1" lower than stock height). Adjusting them while the spring has tension on it sucks!

I feel ya. I ran with just the sound deadening for a while and it looked ugly as hell. Feel free to bug me if you have questions
