PhotoShoot - 1M Undercarriage Photos
I put the car on jack stands tonight to install wheel studs and inspect the calipers since I am changing pads next week. After rolling around under the car I thought I should take some pictures. I didn't realize how much BMW focused on the undertray and making use of the airflow. With little inlets cut into the undertray to cool the transmission and 2 different flaps in front of the rear wheels to direct the pressure away from the wheel well I was impressed with the attention to detail. It reminds me of the undertray of my old Lotus Elise. There have been so many pictures of the exterior and interior of our cars I thought some pictures of the underneath were overdue.

Dan -
Good stuff! From markings, I surmise that the 1M is running the same springs as the M3. I know, of course, that the subrame is the same but figured that they might have used different spring rates. Neil |

Then it must be a "real" M car after all!

Great under car pics. I see the M3 markings on the spring as well, but the 1M is almost 400 lbs lighter than the M3 and it seems that they would use different spring rates for the 1M. I obviously don't know for sure but this is a best guess?
Both 1M and M3 were both tuned on the Ring for spring, shock rates and sway bars.

There's a jack point centralized under the engine. I lifted it from one of the front sides, put a stand under the side rear and central front then used a second jack on the other side and lifted from that side front. It really takes 2 jacks to do it right.
As far as the black kidneys they are the same as a 135. I painted the tips with 1200 degree paint. Off to Helen GA to see some VW's at the yearly show....

I seem to remember reading that the front suspension components were the same as the M3 but the rears were different?

The Engine bay looks 90-95% the same as the 135i.. so I am guessing alot of mods can be transferred over.. essentially the 1M is the 135i with the powerkit in a wider shell with M3 suspension components.. which would be how I would simplify the description... of course there are others who would totally disagree with me lol..

Wow, the M-diff with the finned cover just looks so spectacular everytime I see it...I love my 135i, but I'm super jealous of that!
Do you have active steering, or is this just a different reservoir for the 1m? Looks to be the same as the one on the 135i with active steering. Also, anyone else notice that brace underneath the car (right by the resonator at the rear of the mid-pipe). I don't remember seeing that on my 1er; is this just for the 1M, or am I crazy? I guess I'll have to crawl under and verify. Anyways, nice looking undercarriage! Tim

Great pics, thx Dan! Couple of questions:
1. Can you tell if the mid pipe is the same as on the 135? Wonder if I can reuse my Maddad mid section? 2. Also, is there a CDV on the 1///M?
