Latest on Key Replacement and Cost

Hi,

Think I lost one of my keys or my 11 135i. It does not have comfort access, so I suppose it is a standard key. Dont like the risk of having just one.

Is there a max number of keys that can be programmed to the car?

What is the best way to get best pricing on a key replacement?

Thanks!

Sorry to hear of your loss. The on board computer can only handle a max of ten keys. Because the standard key is still electronic. I can't remember the price off the top of my head. But there have been several threads on point so a simple search of past threads should answer your question. Good luck.

I think a new key is something like $400.

Dackel is correct. Dealer quoted $390 and some change. Takes about 2 weeks as all the keys come from headquarters there in your state.

If you buy a new one, it comes with two standard keys. Don't know about the comfort access. Pricy though.

I saw the old threads, but it seems like in a few circumstances, key cost has doubled more or less overnight... It isnt seemingly exchange rate fluctuations but arbitrary pricing.

My car doesnt have comfort access, so it seems to be a cheaper key perhaps... Not clear if that is the case anymore though.

Was hoping someone would have very recent pricing...

A) Confirm that there is only 10 keys available for your vehicle, 2 of which were supplied upon delivery. leaving 8 replacments until you need a new control unit.

B) takes 2 days, maybe 3 tops to get keys. Not 2 weeks. Key purchases are usually paid upfront and you need to supply proof of ownership (reg / Lic)

C) current remote key fob 66-12-0-413-690 is $245.38 NOTE!! since you lost your key you also need the "slide in key blade" 51-21-7-069-547 Current price is $56.53 for a total of 301.91 + tax

D) Proof of ownership is needed to verify VIN and owner so key cut and program are a match for your car

E) Programming new key takes 10 seconds BUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sisnce you lost a key you need to have it permenetaly removed from your control unit so that if it is ever found it can never start your car, although it can unlock it.
Dealers usually charge between .5 to 1.0 to delete key memory.

Cant be anymore current than that. prices quoted are Retail Retail.. ( meaning no discounts / wholesale / or internet pricing )

Hope that answers your questions.

P.s. I am not offering theses parts for sale, i mearly preseneted this forum with information that i have available

Update:

Dan's changes were absolutely accurate and exactly what we found.

I did without CA specifically because I keep cars a long time and prefer the flexibility to adapt and do things as needed on a low-cost basis when "Murphy" shows up.

While the key was $$$, that is what it is and Im OK with it. No programming or coding needed, all was well.

Bringing up an old thread but I'm trying to order a new key and my PN seems to be different based on realOEM's list. My car is a 2010 with Comfort Access so that might be why the PN for my key fob would be different from the one Dan pointed out. The PN I come up with is 66122296932 versus 66120413694. Although the PN for 2011 is also the 932 PN.

I can't confirm it through Tischer and my dealer is slow to respond. Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: Of course this is the one time my dealer responds quickly, the PN is confirmed to be 66122296932 for 2010 135i w/ CA

It looks like there are two ways to order key fobs/remotes. As a complete set $600 complete with a new CAS control unit or just the key fob for $130. I bet you could just order the key fob.

You really should just consult a local dealer and see what they tell you. Or contact one of the online vendors on Bimmerpost.com Did you see what DriveHard posted above? I think that's pretty good info right there.

Good Luck,

The keys themselves have a price (I believe the CA keys cost quite a bit more than $130/each, maybe double that) and then the dealer will try to charge you $50 or $75 for "programming" the key to the vehicle.

I have seen contradictory information on forums regarding this programming. In one thread I read a while ago, it appeared that the user could program the key easily without paying the dealer to do so. In another thread this was disputed and it was stated that yes, you could program the key to open the doors and maybe unlock the trunk, but that as to actually turning on the vehicle, the dealer had to do that programming.

I would search around the web and on youtube and see what you can come up with. If the non-CA fob really costs only $130, then you are probably looking at around $200 total if you let the dealer charge you for the programming.

On a related note, I have now had TWO recent experiences buying used 1-Series cars where I was initially told by the dealer that the 2nd key had been lost and that there was only 1 key. In one case the dealer later found the 2nd key without any prompting, and in the other case after I insisted that the salesman give some effort to trying to find it, it turned out the 2nd key was in the business office. So I think there is a habit of dealers separating the keys on used vehicles for resale, and sometimes they misplace the 2nd key, but it can be found if you insist that they give it some effort in looking for it.

How does one get the slide-in key copied? I wouldn't imagine the key guy at your Lowe's can do that?

I just bought the car & the dealer only had one key. I'm planning to order another through my Indy and have them program it.

So on the non-CA keys can you have the lost key removed from the cars memory? They still have a chip in them right?

Anybody know if a CA key will work in a non-CA car? I'd love to have one that uses a battery...
