Dry Sump Engine Option

If you are looking at options in swapping out the N54 for a dry sump true motorsport option - what is actually available?

The S54, S63, S65 is out of the question as they are too heavy although it may be a great for a drag car.

Are there any companies convert engines to suit motorsports?

If you want a dry sump just build one in the engine bay somewhere or trunk and plumb it into the stock pan. Summit racing has everything you'll need.

FWIW, I considered an Accusump, but instead ended up simply baffling my oil pan.

RRT Racing did the fabrication and, I believe, VAC (in Phila.) is putting it into production as a kit.

It's on their website. If I keep going back to COTA I'll have to install one. My car went into limp mode once when going through the left hand hairpin at T11. Another 1M driver who is running wider and stickier rubber had several instances of this the same weekend, all on left hand hairpins.

If it wasn't such a PITA I'd do it now but COTA is the only track where I've had a problem like this.

Very interesting as I wasn't aware that oil starvation would trigger limp home mode.

Makes me glad I've baffled my oil pan since I'll be running some BFG R1 tires this weekend!

Please elaborate. Never heard of oil starvation inducing limp mode. How do you know that's what caused the prob?

I don't think turn 10 could cause oil starvation otherwise you would have run into this issue at turn 12 and 1. I think P66 is suppose to read his codes and hopefully will report back with his findings. Both of your cars were running hotter than mine, so maybe it's more of a coolling/temp issue.

So how many 1ms had limp mode or half engine power issues at cota? I'm just getting back into the country so haven't caught up with everything.

The only time it occurred was when I braked too late for T11 and was trying to get turned toward T12. It was a bit messy as I had just passed a car and had to take an inside line. It may have been temp related but I had started to lower my shift points to keep the temps down and was actually running cooler than before.

P22 said all of his issues occurred on left turns so at the time we thought it was oil starvation.

The s65 weighs barely anymore than the 1m turbo engine with all its turbo components, extra cooling etc. S65 not dry sump but has active oil pump scavenging and multiple pumps making oil starvation a non-issue up to 1.6 G's

As much as I love the response on the S65 and the high revving v8, it takes away the torque and drivability and tunability advantage of the 1M. You ended up with a shorter wheel base M3 which is nervous at the limit.
