Just took delivery of my AW 135i fully loaded and all i can say is how can people complain about this thing as a street car? It is exactly what its suposed to be, planted yet forgiving, nimble, great looks, plenty of tech and the power. I for one am happy i didnt get an M3. BMW keep sending us cars like this. Pics to come

Glad you enjoy it. I went on a road trip driving my friend's Accord all weekend. It was a breath of fresh air getting to drive the 1 again. It's a fantastic car. My brother has an M3 and is always parked next to me. IMO, the 3/4 angle on the 1 is cooler looking - more squatty and compact. As for the ride differences - apples and oranges, but I won't go into that. Let's just say I plan on suspension mods soon haha.

I agree...it is what a drivers car should be. I've owned a lot of cars and diffrfent brands, and this 1er is already one of my favorites. It does so many things right. Also, the fact it is fairly "rare" makes it even more special.

And yes, the 3/4 angle is very aggressive looking...I love it.

The suspension actually, 2011 on, is very competent. I've pretty much pushed mine from back roads 80-90ish to 150+. It does have a totaly different ride characteristic than 2010 and prior.....now if i were to track it allot id look at coil overs but for day to day it's very compotent

I was not aware that they recalibrated the suspension for 2011. Can you be a little more descriptive about what's different?

From the very first day I had my 2008 135i, I felt that they made the suspension a little too compliant, specifically the rebound settings on the dampers, which allowed for a little too much vertical body movement which really becomes a factor when you're in a high-speed sweeper and hit some dips and rises in the road. The body movement isn't as controlled as I would have liked. Have they tamed this?

I find the turn in to be sloppy on the stock car (2009) but that's not a problem anymore as i have M3 bushings and control arms front and back.

I just found it anoying when driving my dads or brother in laws surbaru STis and they had more immediate turn in. Well, not anymore.

I think the car is nicely balanced and handles decently, but a few suspension tweeks definitely don't hurt it.

In 2011 BMW went from progressive to linier springes. This took out alot of the sway and rebound when driving high speed/back roads etc. i drove a 08 & 09 and the diff between those and my 11 is night and day. This is not to say the 1er is autoX ready right out of the gate but it is an excellent back roader. I have also been on the stock RFT and though i see where they have limits, such as stutter over uneven turns, they also have excelent turn in and in my opinion held the road quite well.

No, but that's a very good point you bring up.

I did find that the runflats were a bit sharper, however, they liked to skip and jump a bit more.

The stock runflats really don't weigh much more then non runflats, they have them pretty well designed now, but they are so silid, it's like riding on a 10 ply truck tire.

Also, I just swapped my summer rims and winter rims yesterday (aftermarket vs OEM) There is a massive weight difference there... I did weigh the difference last year, and one of my front rims i think (if i remember correctly) was about 10lbs lighter, The rears aren't as bad with a difference of about 5lbs. You can feel the extra weight on the clutch, if driving stick obviously.

The M3 control arms and bushings actually added a lot of road feel without making the car uncomfortable feeling. I could feel the tires hitting cracks on the road through the steering wheel, it's a neat feeling that sadly i've gotten used to and don't realize is there anymore.

I have done the full suspension at this point, so the runflats vs non runflats have basically cancelled out the effects of eachother through mods, I have way more feel then i ever did when i first got the car with the stock tires.

agreed about the tires, BMW did a decent job matching them to the abilities of the car, but to go beyond those abilities, that's where the runflats fall "flat"

Perfect DD. Never mention to be hardcore, except for the One Series M. Very easy car to live with, yet fun to drive.
