Is this covered under warranty?

It seems like my steering wheel is peeling/discoloring on the top...do you guys know if this would be covered under the warranty? I just don't want it to get progressively worse over the years.

Not sure, but my guess is that they will say its natural wear and tear, or failure to maintain it yourself.

If you bitch enough to your SA maybe you can get a discount on a performance alcantara wheel

What MY and what is your mileage? Is it in the sun a lot?

I know they warranty the steering wheel cover peeling but I never came across the problem that you have. Have to check mine now.

One would think it would be covered under the warranty or even "good will". I would certainly tell them this is not what you expect out of a $45K car. Lots of early 1er have this problem with the steering wheel trim (around the buttons) "peeling" off.

It really depends on your SA. As mentioned they will state "Normal wear and tear is not covered". I had a similar wear issue with paint on my 328's driver side window control unit. They reimbursed me for the part and installed it for free after I ordered the part and picked it up Yes, I did have a couple of nice conversations with the SA before I picked the part up.

Good luck

My steering wheel started peeling (not the rim where yours is, but the face where the buttons are). I told my dealership WTF this shouldn't happen. I told him I have two "friends" who drive BMWs and the same crap happened to them and I expected better. Replaced under warranty.

Like others said it depends on you SA and relationship with the dealer. I wore the seat bolster out on a 3 series I had a few years ago and they replaced it under warranty. The plastic steering wheel trim started pealing on my 135i and it was replaced under warranty. I think they would replace the steering wheel if the relationship is good. My gearshift knob is wearing much like your steering wheel. I shall mention it next time I am in for service and hopefully they will replace it. To me it is always worth asking to cover it under warranty.

My car just went in for service.. and it came out with a peeling steering wheel. I called the dealership and the service guy said very quickly that it would be covered under warranty.

Great news !!!! Thats what i thought.. Dont get me wrong, steering wheels do peel...thats just not what happened to yours.. When they peel it more de-laminates thin shavings of leather at a time..

It was easy to spot in your pic that the areas in question were on the surface.

It will happen again...just keep tabs on it so it doesnt build up.. handcreams / cologne / perfumes / and plain old dirt is what does it.

warning to all....dont use agressive chemicals / brushes because you will make it peel if you go to far.. Leather clearner and a rag is all that it should take.

Good Luck / Regards..

If your car is still under warranty it's covered. The finish on my steering wheel buttons started to fade away and you could see the glowing orange coming through...they replaced that under warranty.

with this stuff it depends on the mod of your SA.. if he said not i would just leave and go to another dealer and try your luck there..

I know other people have already commented, but YES this is under warranty. I've had mine in for a similar issue (but not as bad as yours). Def get it fixed....it's worth it to get your S.W. looking like new.
