Has anyone seen or had this problem before?

I noticed today that the leather on the seat is peeling... WTF? What could this be from? Is it covered under warranty? I've never seen this happen to leather in any of the cars that I've owned before...

Most BMW's do that after time especially in the non-black leather... just wear & tear. The wings on these sport seats make it more prone to this wear.

The cars only 6 months old and I barely ever have a passenger maybe once a week. Would this be covered under warranty?

It happens.. usually due to the angle at whice the driver or passanger get in the car..

its almost always the drivers side.. 6 months old ?? with no disrespect is it a large person getting in the car?? in order to avoid the seat may have to be moved back prior to exiting so that it can be easily gotten into..

Warrant per-say, No.. but dealers have been known to repair it <<<<<<< read repair <<<<<<< not replace the seat cover at no charge . ( there are some cases where the replacement was needed due to the stiching / piping becoming un done.

the repair will = a leather / vinyl guy spraying the area in question with leather dye..

you may not want the cover repalced, as all the ones ive seen just dont sit perfect....they always seem to fit a hair loose...

the drivers side is fine... all i've noticed on the drivers side is the leather is really smooth (no grain) on the bottom edge of the seat... i'm assuming that's probably from my jeans rubbing against the leather...

yeah got the car may 1 so 6 months a few days... no worries man none taken... my gf's 5'6 120lbs @ the most so i don't think she's big is she? lol.

i just called my SA so hopefully they'll do something about it... what's with BMW? i've owned a VW and 2 honda's with leather and none of them have ever done this... the mercedes is fine as well...

Unless your passenger has sandpaper jeans i would take it in, seems unacceptable for a 2012 car. Some peeps on here have had the dealer replace it under the warranty and some haven't, give it a shot you never know.

I would just go and talk to a service manager nicely and see what they are willing to do with it. If you go in hot-headed....may not pan out so well for you.

lol.. im going to go with your 120lb GF's weight is not the issue..

BUT i will say MAYBE its how she gets into the car.. as you compared.. BMW's have large side Bolsters and the seat structure is rather stiff.. those other cars you mention have barely any bolster that sticks out, and there seats are usually soft and more forgiving..

Go in nice, introduce yourself , speak with SA or manager and nicely be sad that my "new" car is suffering.. Honey gets you more, than sticks ... I guarantee it .

I'm glad I can contribute to this thread, because I experienced the same issue on my 135i about 3 months after I purchased it and it was rather frustrating. In my case it actually occurred on the driver side, and I am extremely meticulous when it comes to getting in/out of the car, always making sure I don't rub against the bolsters or crunch them. Also, my 135i did not have the M-sport seats, so the bolsters were not as pronounced, yet the problem still surfaced.

Here's what I discovered, which may very well be your problem (or part) as well: there is a seatbelt pinning point on the floor right behind the seat, that forces the seatbelt to rub against the outer side bolster when it's fastened - and this rubbing occurs right on the edge of the bolster. Typically, when you fasten your seatbelt, it has a tendency to wind itself back so that it is somewhat tight and secure against your body, making contact with the bolster. Because my car was so new, the dealer honored a seat leather replacement, which took about 4 months to get to my dealer, since they do not keep seat covers in stock and in fact mine had to be ordered and fabricated in Germany. After the replacement, I fabricated a couple of pieces similar to the shoulder/neck pads that some people use on the upper part of the seat belts, but instead I placed them on the lower section, right on the part of the belt that would come in contact with the bolster. I used a very soft, almost silk-like fabric material that was very close to the color of the leather, and velcro to fabricate the parts. After doing so, I continued to enjoy my car for almost an entire year (until I traded it in) without this happening again on the new leather. You may wanna give it a shot. The neat thing is that they are not very visible, so they really don't mess with the aesthetics of the car, and if you fabricate them properly and tastefully, they actually can look rather nice.

Sadly I never took pictures of it since I thought it had only happened to me and didn't think it was a common issue. All you have to do is measure a full loop around the belt (or 2 loops if you want to make it thicker), and then add velcro on the ends. Your end result should look like this, which are the shoulder/neck pads I was referring to:

Again, if you pick the right material, you can make it look rather good, and even so it won't be visible because it will be on the lower part of the belt.

You're welcome. Like I said, it helped me a ton, not sure if my Taupe boston leather was more susceptible to the belt than other colors. However, a passenger rubbing against the bolster while getting in/out every single time could lead to the issue as well.

Seems premature.

Other than trying to make a warranty claim, my only suggestion is Leatherique.

Just had my bolster re-dyed due to the same issue. My 1er is an 08 w/27K miles. The dealer said no problem to do the re-dye at N/C for he first time, but would charge for any additional re-dying. They considered it premature wear. I was a bit concerned with the re-dye due to the fact my interior is Terra...but it turned out as new. Cannot even tell the diffrence...at all.

Seatbelt rubbing; buttons/rivets on the rear pockets of jeans; you name it, it will find a way to scratch the bolsters. I would suggest getting them to goodwill dye it under warranty, not do a recover---I've read (and noticed above) that the refit is never "quite right."

Also get the contact information of the person doing the dying. It probably won't be the last time you need to have it done.

I had the upper seat (just the leather cover) replaced under warranty for the bolster wearing on the driver’s side on my e46 3 series. The dealer even showed me it was my trousers belt causing the wear.

May not be your GF's weight but something she wears. A belt with a bunch of stuff stuck on it. Jeans with extra rivets.
