Correct, they should not be doing anything to the transmission since BMW does not have it as part of the 1200 mile break-in service for the 1M. The reason why some dealers are (accidentally) doing it is because it is done on almost all other M cars and are doing it out of habit (with the wrong fluid, mind you).

Your best bet is to buy the fluid on your own (either the BMW or Porsche branded stuff, they are both the same). And ask your dealer to do it for you (and pay extra for that), or take it to an indy shop and have them do it.

Well it happened. I even blew off an appointment at my dealer last week b/c I couldn't get a SA to call me back beforehand. The idea was to download all the info here to him/her, and gain confidence the right work w/ the right fluids would be done. Finally did get a hold of a solid SA, and rescheduled.

New SA said - there is no transmission fluid change at 1200 on this car. He confirmed it, and honestly I felt some stress relief. When I got the call that the car was done, SA said the shop manager over-ruled him at changed the transmission fluid. Guess what they put in...

Car is now sitting at the dealer waiting for LT-5. SA is super apologetic and the dealer in general is handling it as best they can.

Moral of the story:

Our car is a low-production frankenstein that is throwing everyone in the service dept for a loop. Throw-in confusing internal documentation with multiple sources (this is my interpretation) and we've got a high service cluster potential.

Find a good SA, build a real relationship w/ that person, and inform yourself, then inform the SA. Oh, and don't be a jerk.

Thank you Metak for this thread.

Ok, so since it seems like the transmission fluid is not being changed as a part of the US scheduled 1200 run-in service is there a write up somewhere that explains how we can do the transmission oil change ourselves?

I googled it and there several photo-illustrated 135i threads on 1addicts, in the DIY section I think. Sorry I don't have the link handy.

Ah, thanks for the tip. I shall hunt them down!

Ok, so here are some links on changing the transmission fluid (they are for 135i, but I'd imagine it's the same for the 1M)? Can that be confirmed?

WOLFE's DIY thread I think is best. That is why I posted my photos in his thread, even though he has a 128i and I have a 135i. It is all the same really on any 1er.

See page four, post #70 for my pics... also on the first page, Wolfe's pics of his oil filter all torn apart is proof enough to change your oil often when the engine is still new. That is why I changed my oil and filter four times (at 1,200, 2,400, 5K, 10K) before its first BMW service at 15K miles.

Congrats and kudos to Patrick BMW and head service pro Brad for researching and finding out that we are all correct in believing that my 1M deserves LT-5. I am going to pay to have them replace what Motorwerks put in (LT-2) but write a blistering letter to BMW NA and my dealership at all levels.

Another quick question, is the MTF-LT-5 transmission still on backorder in the US? I'm trying to locate a couple of liters of the stuff and it's proving a little annoying. Thinking about calling the Porsche dealership to see if they have the equivalent fluid in stock.

I had to locate the fluid for my dealer from a third party parts supplier. Try contacting getbmwparts.com, bimmerzone, bavauto, etc.

My dealership gave me a ~ 2 week timeframe for getting the MTF-LT-5 in stock. They categorically refused to put anything non-BMW in the car (e.g. Pentosin FFL-3). We'll see ...

Yeah, I'd suspect most if not all BMW dealerships would take that stance. It's simple enough to do yourself, I just need a way of lifting the car withough having to invest in equipment.

A floor jack and some jack stands and you're all set.

You could get an adequate set from Harbor Freight for about $100.

Certainly far from the best, but perfectly safe if you use them properly and don't exceed their limits.

I used them for years before upgrading to more serious stuff.

FWIW, I just ordered online two liters of Pentosin FFL-3 from RM European. Was approx. $25/liter.

My SA and I are of the mind; BMW fluid only. My personal circumstances are such that I can wait it out. Which is what I'll do. Total time between selling my e36 and getting the 1M has been over a year. I can chill for a few days, have a nice Xmas weekend, etc.

Praise be this forum for all the research. I can't imagine the dark ages before qualify forums anymore.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.

I have some heavy clunky ones that I got from Northern Tool and some lighter, nicer Blue Point ones from Snap-On.

Have you seriously NOT hit the M or DSC buttons in 1200 miles?

Why oh why would you do that to yourself. (this is not a question) I think you'll kick yourself for not doing it sooner. Hitting both buttons is standard preflight procedure. For the love of GOD due yourself a favor.
