Noob With Another Thread

[edit: thread title should read "Noob With Another TYRE Thread" - yes, I'm havin' a bad day]

Sorry, but after reading a gazillion posts on the net, I came here to get some local feedback.

In short, I would like to (finally) ditch my RFT's. Been thru two sets of Goodyear Eagle NTC 5's 205/50R17. Car is currently sitting in my garage with a flat and I need to sort this out pretty quickly.

My specific Q's are:

Which brand tyre:

Michelin or ?

Size:

Can I up-size on same rims?

Is load rating an issue?

Price:

What should I expect to pay for recommended tyres?

Which tyre shop:

I'm in Sydney Hills district.

Thanks for your help, and please refer me to any links here that has (probably) already covered this ground.

Cheers.

Garage List

I prefer wet tread tyres.

I can't recommend a better tyre than Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3. They cost me 270 a corner and have been worth every cent and more.

Wet grip is insanely good and they're quiet, accurate and take hazards very well.

Noted and appreciate your feedback.

Do you believe these tyres would be OK for my 120d?

i've got falken F452's on mine... even in the wet, they have more grip than any other tyre i've used in the dry.

You can't beat Michelin Pilot Super Sport, but not available in your 17" size.

Michelin PS2 or Continental ExtremeContact DW are probably next best.

I got my MPSS from tirerack.com from USA, save a fortune.

I'd also suggest the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3, or Michelin PSS. Between these two you can't go wrong. The Goodyear are better in the wet, the Michelin in the dry.

Anything less than a $450 a corner (what I've been paying for runflats) is a bonus.

Hmm, good question. I guess I drive the 120d like your average Joe. It's my daily drive (I also have a 'Sunday' car for the adrenaline rush). Could you recommend both a comfort and a performance tyre?

Yes.

Thanks to all for any feedback. Getting advice from enthusiasts sure beats the bollox some of the big tyre shops peddle.

Tirerack from deposit of money to receiving tires only took 5-6 working days for me.

Well, gotta go and hit the tyre shops up today and get this sorted.....unfortunately I don't have the time to get 'em shipped from Tiretrack.

Any additonal advice from you guys would be well received. Especially those who are running non RFT's on a 120d.

FWIW the puncture I picked up yesterday was from driving over a broken bottle. Front passenger side tyre. Now, this ain't a slow leak and it's not holding much (if any) pressure when attempting to inflate. If the manufacturers of these RFT's believe it's safe to drive on a tyre like this (for 100k's at 80kph) they are seriously fecking dreaming.

RFT's? I don't see the point!

Given it's not a slow leak, try the same on a non RFT and you'll see there is a benefit to running RFT. If only they were as good an everyday tyre as a set of Michelin PSS. Otherweise run flats are a great idea and getting better each generation.

PM vans on here as he runs a tyrepower store and has helped interstate guys with tyres.

+1 on Vans (his prices are very good). Michelin PSS/PS2 are brilliant tyres.

Well after having RFT's and NON RFT's I'd rather walk than put RFT's back on the car. perhaps in 10 years they might be close but for now i'd prefer to pack a slime kit and should the worst happen then ring for a flat bed.

Now I might have a tainted view but the last time I changed a tyre due to a flat was on my then girlfriends car 20 years ago, so IMHO I am happy to run good quality tyres and take the chance

Update

Tyre shop (major chains) advice thus far;

"mate, try the Maxxis 35M Asym, I've got these on me V8 Commodore, awesome" HUH?

"sorry, you cannot fit standard tyres on a BMW RFT rim" WTF?

"you will be uninsured the moment you ditch the RFT's" REALLY?

LOL, this is fun, not.

FYI I rang NRMA - they couldn't give a feck about the tyres, as long as they have adequate tread.

A cupla more calls and then I'll prolly PM Vans or maybe even go down the tiretrack.com route.

Crap and Crap.

Well perhaps THEY can't but you can put non RFT's on the stock rims that have RFT's on them. I understand you need a spacial machine to get the RFT's off though.

I'm leaning this way;

Michelin Pilot Sports 3 (205/50R17) - $300 a corner.

Yes?

FFS I need to be put out of my (and your) misery.

My 125i has 17" Michelin PSS (215 and 225), and is used for daily and track purposes without any issues. Hope you find something to meet your requirements!

According to Michelin OZ web site they don't come in 205/50R17's.

As an aside, what sort of k's are people getting from their tyres?

I managed to squeeze out 40k on my Goodyear RFT's - should I expect similar with, say, the Michelin PS3's?

Probably not since the PS3 would be extreme performance tyres which wouldn't last as long?
I would assume 15-20k?

Ouch, I've got a lot to learn.

Any user stories here re treadwear for other suggested alternatives (Contis, Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 etc) ?

(bearing in mind I drive like a granny 90% of the time in the 120d)
