Broken, thanks for pointing out.. I must have heard my dealer wrong... I am in NJ so who knows if things are inflated here.

I'll take down my post ;-)

It's a niche and a gimmick. I'm sure the R&D, and everything that must be done to make those batteries is the same if not worse for the environment. And not every electric socket is pushing out clean electricity!

While I value BMW's effort, all car companies need to realize that a step backwards in usability just cannot work in our society.

I've NEVER ran out of gas. I've only once had a car break down on me that required a tow (Ford, go figure). How many times has your watch, cell phone, laptop, or other electronic device failed on you even when their batteries said they had enough juice? How many times have they been unreliable on a really hot or really cold day.

I'm not against alternative fuel, I'm just for one that makes a bit more of sense. Just what everyone wants, a second, more expensive car that is potentially unreliable out of concept.
It may be a niche or gimmick now, but the technology has to start somewhere. This is the first generation, and I suspect that if BMW and others continue to develop this tech the weight will come down and the range will increase substantially within the next few years.

The electronic devices you mention fail on a regular basis because we allow them too, mostly because the consequences are so low. If I was going to be stranded if my ipod ran out of charge, I'd be a lot more careful to make sure it didn't. I think the cold thing is probably the biggest issue with the current battery tech. I definitely wouldn't want to be stranded in a snow storm in one.

It's a given that we need to find an alternative to fossil fuels, and clearly BMW is betting on electrics. I can't really blame them either. We already have a decent infrastructure for delivering electricity (even if it needs substantial improvements), we understand how much it costs, and it can be safely storred.

That photo of the i3 is over a year old. The more recent spy shots are noticibly different and look more like the concept vehicle.

Hoping to be able to write a short review soon. One of my coworkers is waiting on one. His neighbor is the BMWNA rep for the Active E program, I forget the name. Apparently his car is here at BMW of Morristown and his charging station installed in December, so he should be getting it soon. He's upgrading from a Prius, respect!

Ugh, still irks me that you have to actually live in one of the areas that BMW is offering the ActiveE in. I may not live in one, but I work in one and could charge it at work!!

Five hours from empty. The charging isn't linear, it charges to 90% quickly then takes a while to to the last 10%. I suppose to save the battery from overcharging.

How much does it cost to pick one up? My dealer told me $500 a month plus the $2800 down and then he told me some other number (which I am assuming is a BS dealer add on) which he said brought my total down to about $4000. After looking on BMW website all i saw was the original $2800 down.

I'm assuming you're able shutdown a lot of electronics to maybe increase your run time. does it have heated seats? How much has your home electricity bill increased since the purchase?

It's $2,250 down and $499 month plus MV fees, state taxes, licensing, etc. and it's a two year lease. Yes the dealers will try to sell you the tire/wheel insurance and other stuff. I'm in NJ and electric vehicles are tax exempt so I didn't have to pay sales tax which was a great savings.

"I'm assuming you're able shutdown a lot of electronics to maybe increase your run time. does it have heated seats? How much has your home electricity bill increased since the purchase?"

The electronics don't draw as much as you would think, except the heater. Yes it has heated seats and from what I'm told they use less energy so I use them a lot. I've been driving electric for about three years now(had the MINI-E) so I know a lot about the energy cost. The car uses about 30-33kWh to go 100 miles. Take a look at you electricity bill, it tells you what you are paying for a kWh; it varies throughout the country. The National average is 12 cents per kWh. So it costs about $3.75 to drive 100 miles. The car has an EPA MPGe rating of 102MPGe combined which is spot on if you look at my calculations. In other words, it's the equivalent of a gas car that gets about 100 mpg in it's energy usage.
I drive a lot (30k per year) and it would cost me about $1,600 per year in electricity, but I do have a solar array that makes my electricity so I'm not paying that now anyway.
