Cracked Stock rims
so i dropped off my car last night, and this morningi get a call from my tire guy. He tells me my back 2 rims have huge cracks through them, and theyre all the way through, not even surface cracks. I can either get new stock rims ( yeah right ) get these rewelded for an unknown price, or get new rims all together. Any suggestions? i didnt even know the stock rims were capable of cracking like that. i Had them rerounded about 2 months ago at the dealership cause they said they were bent.

no chewed up li, but generally yes. There was 2 in each rear tire, about 5 inches apart from eachother. One rim would of probably been ok with some epoxy but the other one cracked about an inch through the actual wheel not just the lip

^Looks like what I call "pothole rash". You run over a road crack or a pothole that is just barely wide enough for your wheel to squeeze into, but just slim enough so the inside of the rim can scrape on the edges of the hole.

to be clear, switching to non-runflat tires will make this kind of damage more likely, not less likely. the stiffer sidewall of runflat tires helps to disperse the stress of a large impact across a greater area of the wheel (all things being equal). not that i'm a fan of runflats... just don't switch to non-runflats thinking it's going to help protect your wheels.
there's a small mitigating effect of the softer sidewall of non-rfts reducing some of the ongoing road vibration from getting to the wheel in the first place, but in cases of large impacts, which are generally what cause wheel failure, non-rfts will concentrate the energy of the impact to a smaller area of the wheel, making a failure more likely. |

FWIW, I suggest new aftermarket wheels. When I picked up my repaired wheel, the shop owner told me 75% of his business is repairing BMW and Benz wheels thanks to a combination of how thin they are (he pointed out they are forged, which is superior, but then cut too much to presumably save weight), the low sidewall height, and RFTs.
