Rust cover up question - BMW 1 Series Coupe Forum / 1 Series Convertible Forum (1M / tii / 135i / 128i / Coupe / Cabrio / Hatchback) (BMW E82 E88 128i 130i 135i)

Looks like I got a rock chip, with a bit of rust forming .. how can I clean it?

Is it possible to clean, and then cover it up so it does not rust? Or do I need to have it repaired properly? I got a quote for about $400~

That must be properly cleaned to the core and be eliminated from the metal. It's a disease. It may come from inside and then is not good. If it' from outside then treat it properly asap. If is reaching the under glass side it's bad.

I think i'll just pay the body shop $400 to do it right .. that is a bad spot for rust!

• Using painter tape mask off immediate surrounding area
• Remove oxidation (rust) with finishing paper
• Apply a rust treatment (as tommyboy 0120 suggested), which provides one-step rust treatment that destroys old rust, prevents new rust. Just brush or spray on. Within minutes, rust is replaced by a durable black polymer coating that may be painted
• Allow to dry and then apply a paint finish and finally a clear coat

If you look, it's sort of bubbling, which is why I think it might need to be stripped and repainted ... almost totally to get rid of it.

For rock chips, just covering those up with dr chiprepair guy is OK, right? That'll stop rust for rock chips at least?

BMW offers 12 years rust protection warranty so you might want to check with a dealership prior of doing something; maybe they will do it, I really don't know.
If you have rock-chips but they are not that deep, you can use touch up paint, but usually regardless of the technique, they still show up different than the original paint, especially on metallic paint. Chip rocks will not necessary start the rust if the antocorosive layer was not affected.

3M film it is always a good investment to protect the car.

I will take the car to a body shop that is trustworthy and have it done properly. After you sand the area to the metal, the treatment must be immediate applied, the humidity setles in quite fast if not treated. It is in a good angle, it can still be done nice and clean.
