I think I'll try to kluge up something to allow me to manually release the trunk from the cabin in case of a power outage, yet remain discreet...

I think you can just turn AC right off after pressing auto, keeping auto on.

I'll have to test that later today, because it's been a while since I've tried that, I just leave auto on with a/c all the time, and while I guess it could be shaving off mpg and power, I'm always rather comfortable.

I did notice that you can do that, but didn't understand what just having AUTO on would do... I don't think the manual thoroughly explains that configuration.

Just read the above posts, about the trunk release being inside the trunk. I believe that was a Federal mandate a few years ago - it's an emergency release in case you are locked inside the trunk (e.g. Kids playing, kidnapping). All cars now have it. But not pickups...
