I did notice that you can do that, but didn't understand what just having AUTO on would do... I don't think the manual thoroughly explains that configuration.

Just read the above posts, about the trunk release being inside the trunk. I believe that was a Federal mandate a few years ago - it's an emergency release in case you are locked inside the trunk (e.g. Kids playing, kidnapping). All cars now have it. But not pickups...
