Radar detector install

Installed my new Escort 8500 X50 this weekend.

Initially had it on the dash, which is where my old one was before it died (1996 Uniden, lol), but ended up moving it under the mirror.

Hardwired to the plugs (power and ground) in the upper console / sunroof switch.

My buddy sold me a single suction cup super mount (think GPS mount), and it positions it very nicely under the passenger side of the mirror.

Under the driver side sticks out a little too far.

Think I'm going to try to fabricate a hard mount to the back of the mirror using some sheet metal or aluminum back strap. It bounces just a little bit as is, but I want it solid.

I have no personal experience with the single cup mount, but I will say be careful. I have read a lot of reports where that mount falls apart in heat. I'd be livid if it broke, and the fall broke my detector as well.

Amazon reviews (I've read similar on other sites as well) - http://www.amazon.com/Escort-0010027.../dp/B003DNSJPE

I've used one of those mounts for about 9 months or when it originally came out, whichever is longer. I'm in Fl so the interior gets toasty when parked outside. The mount has only lost suction one time.

If it does fall, it'll dangle by the power cord so I don't think it'd damage anything.

One more reason to fab up a hard mount to the mirror. Wonder if the weight of the detector would cause the mirror to shift?

Ah yes, didn't think of the wire holding it. As for a better mount, I've personally been debating this mount since it is listed to fit the 135

I saw those, but thing it'd be too intrusive if it has to sit under the clown nose.

Great job!

How did you tap into power at the mirror (or upper console)?

Looks fine ... but if anyone else is considering a detector, Escort's SmartRadar is where it's at ... tucks behind the mirror so your view isn't obstructed. Small little display unit clips on your mirror (or you can just use your smart phone).

Tridens, what power source did you use for your SmartRadar, I just received mine in the mail the other day and am debating between powering from the fuse box or the mirror. I've found a great thread on installing from the fuse box, but nothing on how to do so from the mirror. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!
