Should I sell my 135i pride and joy? My girlfriend is preg with our first kid due in november and wants me to sell my car. She has her own car and also says I drive like an ass, payments are to high and we're having a baby so we need something more practical. She says I can get a wrangler and I found a good rubicon for a good price but should I keep my 1 or sell it for the jeep? If I do get the rubicon I'm going to lift it and put 35 inch tires on it. On a side note I have a civic that's my dd. I can't keep the one with the payments and get the jeep so that's out of the question. I love this car so much. what should I do? I have 3.5 more years of payments till its payed off and I know if I keep it I'll hafta here her nagging about the car. I know I'm going to get a used rubicon after I pay the car off if I do keep it. Please help. By the way it's a boy and if I do keep the car maybe one day I'll pass it down to him. What would you do?

Why not get rid of the Civic, or is one reason the payments for the 135i? I understand, selling mine b/c my wife complained for 12 months ! I just couldn't take it anymore.

Don't really see how a lifted rubicon is any more practical than a 135, IMO it would be less practical. I would downsize to one car for the time being. My practical side says to get rid of the 1 and drive the civic until you have a better grip of the financial requirements of a child.

my wife was very concerned about the practicality of my car when our baby came along, but we've had no problems getting a car seat in the back. Well I'm not a tall person, and I only have to move the seat up a inch or two, so that helps.

So let me get this straight -
You have 3 cars now, but won't be able to afford them all because of the new baby?
OK, but why sell the 135i and then buy another car? That makes no fnancial sense. If you need money, sell the most expensive car and use the money wisely. Don't buy another car until you have the extra income.

Agree with ptack above. Plus, a Jeep is a crazy idea, particularly if lifted. There is no practicality there plus a terrible ride.

I believe that lcrain summed it up best on the costs involved with having a child. My wife and I are proud parents of a 10 week old little girl. A couple examples: if you go the route of feeding your child formula, plan on spending $100/month. Diapers will cost about the same per month. I could go on and on with the funds required to have a child, but if this crimps your finances, the 135 must go. If not, I would at least get rid of the Civic. If you do have to get rid of the 135 and need something to "drive like an ass" on an occassional basis, pick up a 3-5 year old Maxima. Sure, it's FWD, but their cheap to maintain and cheap to buy because they depreciate like a SOB. If you keep your car, a child seat fits just fine. With power seats, it's no biggie to getting the car seat in/out.

I'd recommend get a practical daily, that's still powerful and fun.

335 x drive would be my choice. Get the sedan, you've got easy rear seat access. Buy CPO so it's not much more than your 135 and dump the civic. Enjoy your car daily and drop the extra insurance payment and keep a single car payment. Plus it's tunable, and handles great (though it will 'feel' much bigger and heavier than it is).

That would be my choice, long before a jeep...

Me either (glad mine is paid off and I have a practical car if I ever find myself in this situation). It sounds like it is more of a financial issue in this situation though. If that is the case, selling the 135 and replacing it with a Wrangler may not be the best option because there will still be a payment. However, the Wrangler is an all weather vehicle and could also replace the Civic daily driver. Some of you may not believe it, but the 4-door Wrangler can be considered "practical". It would be terrible on gas though until they offer it with the diesel in the US.

OP, if the finances are the main issue, your girlfriend is probably hoping you'll realize the 135 is an unnecessary expense right now since you also have the Civic. If the car payment isn't that big of an issue, maybe you can try to convince her that you grew up as a "car guy" and you would like your son to grow up with a similar experience. That may be a long shot though. Good luck.

I'm not married(never have been either) but it seems that the men are always ask to make concessions. I would keep the 1er for now it can transport 2 kids perfectly til they're 7 or 8. By that time it should be paid off and you can get a more "family orientated" transporter. I have a 4 year old nephew and he fits fine with a booster seat. If payments are too high I would consider a trade for a VW MK6 GTI 4dr, it's still German, its safe and fun to drive. GL man!!

I have a four month old and this car is great. It has latch system, easy to fit car seat behind passenger side. If you have manual seats it's very easy to fold seat forward, put in kid, and fold seat back. Also, fold down the drivers side back seat and you have plenty of room in the trunk for the stroller, diaper bag, etc.

Our little one actually seems to prefer my car compared to my wife's e90, because it is a coupe, less light gets into his face while we're driving around and that means a less fussy baby.

If that doesn't work, play up the safety angle. This car is more agile than a jeep so you can avoid accidents, better brakes, airbags, etc.

Like most people here, I'm a bit confused as to your situation. Is the Civic paid off or not? Where would the money come from for the jeep?

If the payments on the 1'er are too high, would refinancing it help? While its not the best solution to extend 3.5 years of payments to 5 years, you have to weigh the total cost against buying and modding a jeep that you then have to feed far more gas than your 1'er consumes.

I am really freaking confused now! I would ask myself the following questions:

1. Is the Civic paid off?

2. How much money can I sell my civic for and can it pay off my 135i?

3. She has her own car, wtf...sell her car and the civic pay off your 135i and get her a new family car. (Only one payment).

4. If a carseat fits in the back, sell the civic and use your 135i as the daily driver?

There are other way to solve this problem and not have to get ride of the 135i, imo.

i've had my car for a few years and my daughter is now 4, no problems at all. In fact, she prefers the drive in 135i over our family SUV.

I would hold off on caving and selling your car. You may regret it if you two break up. Not to sound like an ass or anything, just trying to be real here. That said, I have owned two Wranglers, including a Rubicon, before my BMW's and I will tell you one thing: Unless you live somewhere with a decently snowy winter, the Wrangler is FAR from practical. In fact, I would rate it as less practical (practically no trunk) than your 135 and I have had experience with both. To top it off, you will never see better than 15mpg anywhere, city or highway, and with those 35's (my first wrangler had 33's) you will be closer to 12mpg. Better hope gas prices don't go up too much or you will be paying for it at the pump instead of with car payments. Keep in mind, I love wranglers so I am not biased against them by any means.

That's my 2 cents. I think it's a terrible decision personally unless you really want a wrangler and it will be payment free...
