Air Ducts Under the Seats

There are 2 air ducts under the driver and passenger seats. I had some dice on the floor in the back, and they rolled into the ducts. Anyone know how to get them out?

It wouldn't be a problem except I hear them rolling around while braking/accelerating and sometimes even while making a hard turn.

You might try this: on a quiet road, or empty parking lot, accelerate HARD in first gear, but only momentarily (like a half second), then ease off the throttle and smoothly disengage the clutch, and let the car coast to a stop, without applying the brakes... The whole point being to get the dice to slide rearwards - coasting to a stop hopefully will keep the dice towards the rear of the ducts. Once stopped, set the handbrake and get out of the car, move the seat as far forward as it'll go. Then with a flashlight, have a peek into the ducts and try to fish it out?

It's either that, or you need to remove the front seats (disconnect battery first or you'll get an airbag fault when you replace the seat), center console, and forward carpet to get at the duct.

I had the same issue in my E90 with change. Change would fall out of my right pocket and down the side of the seat. It would then fall into those vents. I wound up taking a flexible plastic stick and wrapped duct tape around it (sticky side). I was able to recover all the change. It's very frustrating to hear money jingle around every time you accelerate or brake.

Lost something in there once tried a few option but what worked was using a coat hanger with duct tape on it, still took a while but eventually got it.

Looks like as soon as it's cooled off, I'm going to try the hanger idea. I did some searching on the internet, and it looks like other people have just removed the seat, then pulled up the upholstery, then removed the duct and found whatever it was that got lost in there. That just sounds like a PitA!

I wouldn't even bother, it's just the rolling is really annoying.

May I suggest installation of some type of screen to prevent foreign material intrusion into the duct ????

I got 1 out of the 3 dice out of the air duct by just trying to accelerate quickly and then coast to a stop. 2 more to get out of there...

Stop gambling in the car and do it in the alley way as it was intended. The dice bounce a lot better off the side of a building anyways.

Still got 2 of them stuck in there, rolling around.

I'm going to try the coat hanger idea tomorrow.

All gone. Note to everyone: don't put anything in your back seats, or on the floor in the back that is small enough to fit through those ducts and rolls.

I know your pain. My son lost his marbles (literally) in the back seat one day and two of them found their way into the ducts under the driver's seat. Drove me nuts, until I got them out using the method I outlined previously. I found some coarse plastic mesh and zip tied it onto the vents - hasn't happened again.

Do this and hit the gas:

Seriously, how about accelerating up a steep hill (if you have one handy)?

The problem isn't always a straight line. The driver's side has a slight funnel to the right (center of the car), and the passenger side to the left (toward the center of the car).

To make this more difficult, the vents have a lip that curves slightly up and out. It does take some strong acceleration to do; something are cars are capable of.

It's just a big annoyance if it happens, and I'm surprised it was designed as it was.

It was not designed for dice or marbles to be put into the vents.

Easy.
1 Take the seat out
2. Use cost hanger or other.
3 replace seat. Total time 30 min

(note u might want to unplug the battery, some vehicles Airbag sensors don't like when you tilt the seats)
