Dealer quote for SSK install in my 128
Parts: $180 (no knob or boot)
Labor: $240 Total: $420 Does this seem reasonable for this mod to you? I thought the parts would be cheaper - and is that what, 2-3 hours labor?

Also I got the dealer to install it for no more than $200 and the install time should not take no more than 2 hours. I believe from BMW documentation no more than 1.5 hours

BMW SSK
I just had BMW install the SSK on my 128i and other than a 10% discount on the kit, the instalation is what you stated. Total parts and installation, around $400. Seems like such a lot of money for such a relativly little change but I so much enjoy the shifter the money doesn't seem to bother me.

If you can brush your teeth without poking your eye out, you can probably install the ssk yourself.
Well, maybe not quite that easy, but it really is a piece of cake on the 128. The 135 is more difficult as you have to replace the selector arm as well (not to be confused with shift lever). Almost all the work can be done from the top. Only exception is the retaining clip for the shifter linkage. Even for this, I was able to reach up around the drive shaft from underneath without having to remove underbody plates or any other bits. As someone else mentioned in a DIY, the hardest part was getting the stock shifter knob off! |

I think the BMW "book time" is just over one hours labor(1.1 hrs). Some dealers will charge you two hours. Your parts price looks about right. Be glad you don't drive a 135i... that kit is a few bucks more! It is a simple job to do yourself... but IF you drop or break one of those C-clips... it can become a real PITA job. My guy/mechanic at the dealer had to drop my mid pipes... bc his hands could not fit up between the driveshaft and the heatshield. IF you do the job yourself use some "stork" needle nose pliers and have a telescopic magnet handy. And still you might need to drop teh exhaust/mids so maybe have two gaskets on hand. ![]() Dack |
