Built before 9/10

I noticed on tire rack that they ask if my 128 was built before 9/10. It was.

But, what is the difference between a before 9/10 and after 9/10 2011 128i?

I believe there was a change to the valve stem/TPMS unit.

+1. Yup. Two different types of TPMS units.

TPMS and the really shitty stereo depending on when pre 9/10 you got it. God that stereo was terrible.

My speaker were made of paper. Really terrible. I replaced them with Focals. The stereo sounds much better than the HK setup now.

I've heard a lot of comments about the stereos. Mine was a 6/10 build and the BMW Professional 8 speaker system that's in there is great. Please keep in mind I have upgraded my sound systems in every car I've owned with high quality competition equipment. No particular need to upgrade anything here.

Maybe yours was a fluke or something because mine was built 6/10 as well and I had the crappy 6 speaker stereo. BMW has three levels of stereos available in the 1 series: base, HiFi and the Harman/Kardon. For about a years time prior to 9/10 BMW was putting the 6 speaker base stereo in there where as before that and after 9/10 they were putting the 8 speaker HiFi in as standard. Is your car a convertible by any chance? I had seen some people with convertibles built during the base stereo period reporting they were getting the 8 speaker system.

No mine is a coupe - BMW Professional HU, two 6x9 subs under each front seat.

Do you have the two tweeters on the door by the side view mirrors? Like in this picture? Just an FYI, even the base stereo has the subs under the seat and the Professional head unit. Only markets outside North America get the Business head unit.

I've got two Focal tweeters that are on the door by the side view mirrors. The stock system had no front tweeters.

Yes my tweeters are in the same location, as well as the mids being by the handle grip.

Another interesting difference. The HK system now has 10 speakers. The rear deck has separate tweeters now.

I'll double check it again, but I think I have 8... 1 under each seats, 2 on each door (1 speaker 1 tweeter) and 2 in the rear. 1+1+2+2+2 = 8

Where are the 2 extra on the new HK system? May be I do have them but never paid attention...I know that when you pay for Premium Sound, you get an equalizer that you can play with, but I do not actually know if you get extra speakers...May be the ones below the seats ?

No, even with the terrible 6 speaker base system there were low quality speakers under the seats.

The 10 speaker system now is 2 speakers on door, 2 tweeters on door, 2 speakers on the deck behind rear seats, 2 tweeters on the deck behind rear seats, 2 subs under seats. If the old HK system was in fact 8 speakers, I'm almost certain it was because it did not have separate rear tweeters.

Where are the locations of the tweeters in the rear ?

Now I am thinking, I might not have HK system, but have the Logic7. Because I do not have anywhere written Harman Kardon....

The rear tweeters are under the same speaker cover as the rear speakers. Yeah, if you have HK it would say it on the grills of the front tweeters.

not to mention the amplifier in the trunk would also be labeled HK.
