GI: 1M Rear Fender Flares

Hello guys,

This is a gauging interest thread to see if it is worth my time to invest in.

*** Note if you would be interested in a 4 corner flare set to the likes of a LibertyWalk or Rocket Bunny style over flares instead of 1M style***

I purchased full OEM 1M rear quarter panels as I am completing a full widebody conversion to my 135i. I know that there have been many member interested in this conversion and their biggest concern is the rear arches.

I am very experienced in fiberglass work and was thinking of creating replica 1M fender flares. The person would then have to trim out their old fender arches (unless you don't want the wider tire clearance inside) and mould these into place.

These would all be formed off my OEM steel panels to get the best possible replica you could make. All OEM mounting points would be intact and reinforced.

the objective of these would be to make the conversion easier for all the members who want to have the widened body, without all the extensive costs of custom work.

My price would be in the $400-500 ballpark. If I feel like I can make them cheaper then I will. The more people interested, the more I can knock off. To a certain extent. Depending on numbers, I can make multiple original moulds, so they don't start to wear out from excess usage if there are a number of interested parties.

The pieces will be 3-4" from where the flare comes off the flat of the body. that gives you enough space to mould and blend it all into the body.

similar to these

Im looking for a list of people who would be interested in these, before I even make the mould to start. If there isn't enough interest, then I will just mount my panels and finish my conversion.

Personally if I was going to do it I would pony up for steel.

I would say if it's easy for you to do, just make the mould and save it. If an accident happened and I needed to repair the rear I would consider this. Moulds might come in handy over the next year for people wanting this. Doubt there will be a lot of people all at once.

I know there are other ways, and it wont be for everybody. I just want to see if it is worth my time and if people are interested at all.

All other ways are a lot more money. So I'm trying to make this easier for the people who may not have the coin to throw at this.

My thoughts were incorporating a metal band in the fender lip for mounting holes and added strength

I definitely think the metal band is a good idea.

A widebody conversion is something that is on my list, but not for a while. I've seen a fairly slow but steady trickle of people doing this, so you may get some hits, but it definitely won't be a rush I don't think.

Regardless, awesome idea and thanks for putting it out there.

Definitely would be cool to do, but if I do it won't be for a while. Sounds like you have a solid plan though.

I would definitely be interested, but not now. Like munky said it would be later on down the road. If you could make the flares totallly out of metal and they fit for the price you quoted I may be persuaded to purchase and store away for when the time comes.

This is awesome! I just wished someone made a rocket bunny kit for the e82. I would do it in a heart beat and cut my fenders to bolt the new flares to mount wide wheels and tires

do a lot of people like the rivet style aggressive flares?

I can think about making something along the lines of rocket bunny and liberty walk

I would HIGHLY advise against this idea! It would look stupid when you gain the 30-40 mm of clearance. (Check my build thread on the 1st page if you want to see how stock 135i wheels look inside of a 1M flared fender.)

Yes I think that is the new hotness. It's a hate it or love it thing!

I'm very interested to original 1m style. As original as possible. Keep me update. Thx. (Btw I've a e88, does that make any big difference? )

I will start with the OEM 1M flares for now since it seems there is enough interested people, and once I have them finalized I will move onto developing a full flare kit similar to the Rocket Bunny and LibertyWalk kits. I just received an email notifying me that some of my parts I need for this project are bumped back to a 4 week wait. So keep the interest and ideas coming and I will update when I have everything in my hands and can start making the moulds. I may sketch up some ideas for the full kit to see what everyone thinks

Can you guys that are interested in purchasing the OEM flares post up a list and copy and paste and add yourself to it so I have some accurate numbers. I need these to decide what kind of mould I will need to make to support the output numbers

Thanks!

I would be interested in this for a future 1M build I'm planning. However it needs to look OEM. Bolt on flares just look cheap and unattractive even when painted in my personal opinion.

The first style will be moulded off my OEM rear quarter panels, just cut down to a manageable size for everyone to make the job way easier. Also saves on shipping costs, because the rear quarters are almost half the car and are NOT cheap to ship!

Sounds awesome...would the final product look the same as the 1M rear flares or would it be a little different?
