different brand of tires in the front & back

guys,

have anyone here used a different brand of tires on the front wheels and the back wheels ? same spec size but just different brand ?
My pre-owned bmw 135 comes with Dunlop SP in the front (non-run flat) and Bridgestones Runflat (original) on the rears.
the previous owner according to the dealer destroyed the front tires so he replaced it with non-run flats.
Anything i should be concern on this regards ?

The car doesn't have a spare tire. If u get a flat up front your gunna need a tow.

You sure the fronts aren't runflats? Dunlop makes sp sports in runflats. Should say dsst if its runflat

Different brand tire will offer different type of traction and grip. That is the main thing to be concerned about. Its not good to have different brand/types of tires since the fronts might not hold up to wet roads as well as the rears would.

the fronts are definitely not run flats as those are not locally available. Thats why the previous owner replaced them with non-run flats. So as it is, the front are non-run flats and the rears are run flats.

Most tire shops will not even install this type of setup unless the owner signs a waiver against the shop in case of an accident. I would replace the rears with matching tires.

And drive very, very cautiously until you get 4 matching tires mounted.

Echoing whats been have said, its not wise to mix different tires, certainly not rfts with non rfts. Theyll ride quite differently, break lose differently, and channel water away differently. Id be very modest in how i drove until the tires are matched.

Nothing wrong with it. I'm doing it. Khumos up front and stocks in the rear.
Car actually is more stable with a sticker softer non run flat front tires.

Most people wouldn't recommend it and I don't suggest running non run-flats and run-flats. Will make your car feel somewhat unbalanced because the difference in sidewall stiffness.

The dealer offered to replaced the front tires with run flats so no issues there.
He will give me the front existing tires for free which are non-run flats. I should probably buy the matching rear non run flats for spare.
I actually drove the car with the non-run flats mixed with the run flats, its fine and it corners ok, no issues there.
Im just curious about it when all tires are replaced w/ run flats.

is it also true that if you hit the nail or puncture the run flat tires, it can go another 150 miles and a slower speed ?
How does one fix a run flat tire ? say it was punctured by a nail or glass or something sharp ?

A RFT may be repaired like any other tire, unless it has been damaged by running while flat. Since most punctures result in a slow leak, some of us carry a 12 volt compressor so that a punctured RFT may be re-inflated en route to a repair facility and the tire safely repaired. The TPMS should warn you when a tire is deflated 25% below the base setting.

Since they cannot tell if it has been internally damaged, BMW dealers will generally not repair RFTs, but some tire shops will.

Thanks for sharing the post.
I dont know how true this is, but according to the BMW dealer, the RFT may be repaired but once it has been repaired, it will not last that long anymore due to the compound used in the tire itself ? is this true ?

OP i emplore you, ditch the rfts when you can. A good set of non rfts are SO much better, not to mention cheaper. Seriously, rfts are just terrible.

Yes, im seriously considering ditching them. If i do, what solution can you recommend if i get a flat tire in the middle of the road ?

I had always heard the 50/50 rule you can run a flat RFT up to 50MPH up to 50 miles and from what I've heard more than a few miles you start counting down the clock and when you get to 50+ your buying a new tire. I carry a slime repair kit with a tire pump and a tire plug kit figure the price I saved on tires more than exceeds the towing expense and another tire if something ever happens. As for non matching tires it's not a big deal if they are comparible tires and since the RFT's don't do anything but run flat and rain decent then the fronts are probably better so there should be very little concern other than rain and the first time you drive in it you'll know how it is. As quick as these cars go through tires I would just wear then out and then replace them.

another question ?? if using non RFT, will the sensor on the dashboard still indicate if your tire pressure is low ?
brusk, where can we buy the tire pump and the tire plug kit ? is there a website i can find such items ?

I have gone through the same thing I thought I loved the runflats but once I changed to M PSS it was awesome.. The price difference was huge... I had runflats on the front and nittos on the back a long time ago. The car drove like crap. (I only did that cus I had a nail and most shops think repairing a runflat is a bad idea. Also didnt want to buy 4 tires)

The best thing you can do is go buy a tire repair kit. (It had some goo in it and a pump) and the M PSS tires and you are set.

I have had nails on my runflats and didnt know it. I was running late for something and was pushing 95mph on the highway (I do not recommend this) but it shows how great the runflats are. But I was just sick of constantly replacing them. I had the car for almost 2 years and could have bought a used rolex for what I spent on tires. (FL has a ton of construction)

I pushed the Runflat pretty hard till the end cus i was so indecisive about what tires to get.
