BMW ppk

Hi guys,

I'm in 2 minds about getting the ppk because of the seripusly steep price. Is it worth it to those of you that has it? I haven't done an aftermarket tune because of mp, so this is the alternate, I have the pe which was definitely worth it.

Any views on this

I agree that the price of ppk is a bit ridiculous for the gains you get. In terms of aftermarket tunes, there is always risk associated, but as long as you are diligent about removing them before bringing the car in its not a large one imo. Unless you are having a significant piece of wareanty work being done, the dealership is not going to go digging through your car to find a tune. It boils down to how much risk you are willing to assume, i went with cobb ap and havent had any issues, the flip side of this coin is that if something really serious happens, it likely wont get covered under warranty. Between giac, cobb, procede, jb, etc there are alot of great options out there.

I picked up my new (2010) 135i yesterday, with BMW PPK. Not sure if PPK is worth the price tag, but damn, it sounds awesome! Luckily for me, it was installed by the previous owner.

We have it on our 09 135 Vert and to us, well worth the price. Never a warranty issue, some HP and TQ improvements, sounds great, and better than new after a software change that seem to rob some power. If I did not get the PPK1, would have went with Dinan. I know there are many that make more power, but I did not want any problems at the dealer if an engine blew. Now after the Warranty period, I would consider other options. Then again, in rush hour Chicago traffic, does it really matter all that much?

Thanks guys for the feedback, I'm trying to find out if using dinan doesn't void the Motorplan, because there add se good gains with dinan which might be worth looking at.

The price for the ppk here is abt $2500 which is in my option just hectic but you also get all the hardware that goes with it

thats 2500 for ppk2 right? even so, man thats alotta change for the gains+added cooling. you could go cobb+fmic+dci+DPs for a similar cost. But i understand the warranty concerns, its the reason why i stopped modding short of downpipes.

I got ppk about two weeks ago. Although car doesn't pull as powerful as n55 with vishnu tune, I can still feel it pull quite harder than stock.

i kinda wish it burbles more though.

From the ShopBMWUSA website

PPK1 - $800 (uninstalled) gets you this:

More horsepower; more torque and unlimited exhilaration. With sporty performance, outstanding driving dynamics and innovative technology, the Version 1 Power Kit maintains all of BMW's key attributes but allows you to put a personal touch on your BMW. The Performance-Optimized Engine Software provided by the Version 1 Power Kit increases torque to 332 lb-ft (automatic transmissions) or 317 lb-ft (manual transmissions) available from just 1,500 rpm. Power output is increased by 20 horsepower, from 300hp to 320hp. This results in faster acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (0.2 seconds faster than the standard model) and from 50 mph to 75 mph (0.5 seconds faster than the standard model). Even with this increased power, the fuel consumption and emissions ratings remain the same as they were with the standard model. The Version 1 Power Kit also adds a very sporty exhaust burbling noise during engine overrun conditions. BMW Power Kits are the only form of “tuning kits” approved and covered under the BMW of North America limited warranty. Power Kits are designed and tested by BMW engineers to provide the highest power increase without sacrificing reliability.

For vehicles equipped with option code S840.

PPK2 - $1445 (uninstalled) gets you this:

More horsepower; more torque and unlimited exhilaration. With sporty performance, outstanding driving dynamics and innovative technology, the Version 2 Power Kit maintains all of BMW's key attributes but allows you to put a personal touch on your BMW. This Power Kit contains the same engine performance software as Version 1, plus an Auxiliary Water Cooler and an Enhanced Radiator Fan to reduce the higher thermal stresses on the engine during extreme driving. The Performance-Optimized Engine Software provided by the Version 2 Power Kit increases torque to 332 lb-ft (automatic transmissions) or 317 lb-ft (manual transmissions) available from just 1,500 rpm. Power output is increased by 20 horsepower, from 300hp to 320hp. *The BMW Performance Power Kit is only applicable to vehicles equipped with option code 840 (high speed limiter). This Power Kit is only for vehicles with the MSD81 DME (vehicles produced from 03/2008 are normally equipped with MSD81). Vehicles with the MSD80 DME will require a new engine control module. The necessary replacement DME is included in Power Kit PN 11 12 2 157 664. Please confirm which DME is in the vehicle before ordering.

you shouldnt be paying $2500...thats insane...

I bartered with the guy a little and got them down to $800 for the PPK and install...

I feel the diference 100%, BUT I cannot wait to get out of warranty to really juice my baby up...for the same price or less most other tunes will throw around an additional 60-100HP and 60-100LB...that being said, I only have 6,500 miles on the car, and its going to be a long wait...if you're in warranty and are worried about it, go with the PPK, do bolt on mods, and mess with the software when the warranty expires...

One thing you have to consider is you cannot get more hp/tq from BMW PPK while you can with other after market tunes.

So essentially the PPK 1 is a software upgrade, and simply a more aggresive tune? And the PPK 2 includes the cooling fan and an additional water cooler? No exhaust change? nothing else?

Would be nice to see a solid description as to what comes with each of the kits.

Post #14 is a direct copy & paste from the BMW website. How much more of a "solid" description are you looking for???

Through dealings with many of the other parts departments and manufacturers (I spent a number of years as a parts counterman) There was always an outline of the exact parts that were included in such kits and the part numbers associated with them. i was hoping someone here would be able to expand on it in that regard and not simply make an ignorant comment that I should refer to a previous post, which I have already read thoroughly. I ask, as the local dealer is relatively new and their parts manager looked at me like I was smoking crack when I asked about the PPK. I'd like to have some in depth knowledge to make it easier when I go to order!

This simply states that its a tune, a fan and an auxiliary cooler. It does not denote any water lines, clamps, brackets, air ducts etc. that are associated with those kinds of changes. I am also surprised to see that there are no intake, exhaust or other changes contained within it. Albeit 20hp is fairly simple to attain from just a tune and the remainder are there to keep the engine happy with said increase in combustion temps, it still makes me wonder why they hadnt increased airflow anywhere.

Hopefully someone here has that information from their install, or works in the parts department at one of the dealerships and is able to answer my questions.
