No _extra_ turbo lag in the 'is' versus the regular 135i. Power is great but the nonlinear throttle mapping sucks. E46 M3 has ~same HP, but WAY better throttle response. I've already considered throttle mapping modifiers... |

Is the 135IS an N54 or N55?

![]() M3 is a n/a with ITB's etc., so it's hardly rocket science that it will have waaaaay better throttle response. For a road going production turbo engine, the N55 is pretty damn good as far as throttle response goes IMHO.

Going to miss your column, but look forward to a feature article on the 135is this spring ;-) (once your summer wheels go back on). It would be nice if it also served as tips on great sunday drives in the northern NJ area. I am immobilized by procrastination on what to replace my sadly departed M5 with. Its been 3 months without a BMW. I have consumed alot of wine to get through it... This thread as added another contender to my wishlist which currently consists of: Another E60 M5, E90/92 M3, F30 diesel (wait and see though..), F10 535i M-Sport, 1M (still awefully pricey on the used market) 135i has intrigued me since its release, to the point that I put money down on a 1M in 2010 and never got an allocation (still bitter). Perhaps I need to take one out for a drive again and see how it floats my boat...The Please bring it out to the Cars and Croissants NJ meet in March. They start up again first weekend in March I believe. Thanks 135is owners for the pick me up this morning, I just joyrode on your support group!

Best thing I could say is to go drive a 135is or 135i before you make any decisions. You will notice a major build quality difference in a 1 and an M5 (duh). Matter of fact, if you shoot me a PM, you're more than welcome to come drive mine once the summers are back on and you can get the real feel. I've never heard of cars and croissants - I'd absolutely love to come. Get me some more info! |

Very cool. Well, let's advertise here, and I'll put it out to my ZHP friends as well.

None of that is news. Since they use an electric throttle position, they can apply all sorts of throttle maps. (torque demand, power demand, and combination of). As such with little 'turbo' lag, the non-linear nature of the engine can be effectively smoothed. AS-IS there are two distinct maps 0-50% is daily driving, 50-100% is track mode. The blend point is very evident, and it doesn't need to be.

Mine is a MT. From my limited DCT driving, it was obvious that DCT in sport mode has a more aggressive tip-in. The rest wasn't as evident/memorable. Although it was enough to say, that if you want a fast car, DCT is the way to go!

throttle mapping modifiers
Elwood, what modifiers were you considering? I emailed Dinan and their chip won't come out till ~July. I would favor Dinan, as the warranty is not affected. I have a DCT and really like it. More torque and power is always welcome. Thanks.

Thought process hasn't gone too far. It's low on the priorities as track season approaches. Don't really need/want more power so while Dinan sounds great it's a large ticket item. First priority is a new trans for the track car!

So over the weekend I finally got around to swapping out my stock tails for blacklines and also installed LUX 5000Ks...really digging the new look. The 5000K bulbs get you a really nice match to the brows and xenons, while the blacklines are subtle but definitely better looking on the SG.
As others have discovered, tails were a breeze (15 min) while the LUX were a bit of a hassle because of the confined space behind the headlight assemblies (30 min). Haven't had a chance to take good pics but here's a sampler:
