rattle noise question

Hi guys,

just wanted to have your opinions and see if any of you hear the same noise on your 128i manual trans.

So the noise I hear is once the car is warmed up and been driven for 10-20min, at stop, in neutral I hear some sort of a rattle that goes away if I press the clutch pedal completely. The noise is not really loud and sound like if there was some plastic cover that is loose but it is definetely not it.

After searching I see that it can maybe related to the input shaft bearing being bad. My car has 40000km and still under warranty but something tells me that the dealer will say that this noise is normal !

Let me know if you hear something like this on your car.

IF when you push in the clutch this rattling noise goes away... it's the dual mass flywheel working. This noise is normal.

When I switch off my 6MT 135i, I always depress the clutch pedal(as I switch the engine off) to avoid hearing the flywheel spool down/clatter.

I would say that it sounds similar but definetely not that loud or maybe it is because of the quality of the video clip that it sounds worst

That makes sense that that video would sound worse. LTW flywheels tend to amplify the rattle.

Throw out bearing? Sound goes away when clutch is pushing in.

Lol it's embarrassing loud. One of my friends is building a '98 e36 328 coupe for a turbo setup, he has a puck clutch and lightweight flywheel. You get some weird facial expressions from people at stoplights cause of the noise.

Yeah I had one for a bit in my E36 M3. I got tired of explaining that it was, in fact, working as intended.

Go over to any e30 m3 forum and search for input shaft bearing rattle. They all do that. Mine rattles pretty bad with Redline MTL and not so much with MT-90. BTW, nothing bad happens over time... ( on an e30 m3 at least)

This bothered me so much and I honestly thought something was wrong. Took it into the dealer and they told me, input shaft bearing noise, operating as intended. I guess it's normal on our cars.

It is good to hear that I am not the only one hearing this noise

They shouldn't make any noise, though...that's the main reason for a DMF, to absorb spikes from direct injection that rattle the trans gears...you might want to check out what's rattling by pulling the tranny....replace the TO bearing, input shaft bearing and clutch disc, use an anti-rattle disc (springs in the hub)...check the dual-mass flywheel for any broken springs or difficult movement...if you don't want to mess with all that, try heavier tranny oil....a little STP in the tranny might quiet the rattling, too.
