Seen something different today!!
Well I had a road trip to pick up my set of winter wheels today.. The place was 130 miles away so this has been the longest trip in the 1M. So I filled up the car and started on my way... As I was not in any hurry I thought I would just set the cruise controll to 70 mph. I got to the location and picked up the wheels , which are in mint condition and I am really pleased with the price I paid for them.
So loaded them in the car and set back off for the trip home..... This is when I saw something that I have never seen in this car before!!!! It was returning 34 mpg ...... So 260 mile round trip and showing 80 mile left in the tank when I parked up..... I never knew this car could do this sort of return in the fuel....... I just love it.....

It's always nice to find another thing to make you smile about your car. 34 is really impressive. I have a 128i and I get 30 when it comes to ling highways trips. I didn't use cruise control so I'll try that next to see what happens. Enjoy your car.

I don't get that kind of mpg over here in Germany... haha. Congrats on the new wheels.

My all time worst was 123 miles (198 kms) on 12.7 gallons(48L) of fuel = 9.7 mpg. But I was driving around 170 mph!! Normally I get around 19 mpg - driving more sensible speeds(~130 mph).

I usually need to fill up after around 130 to 150 miles max (mostly city and short commute and if not city then I am really pushing it somewhere outside, so worst conditions to have any good mpg in any case) but I had a sensation that 1M could do much better, probably better than a regular 3.0 liter NA engine and maybe as good as a classical 2.0 liter engine due to high levels of tq low down and its flexibility so you really can keep it pleasantly cruising and responding at around 2000 if not lower rpm on a proper highway without lowering the gear...which did not happen to me yet!

Based on my calcs assuming your full range would have been 340 miles, your fuel economy would have been 24.3 miles per gallon or 29 miles per imperial gallon which is nothing out of the ordinary.
The key to maximizing fuel economy is short shifting and no WOT runs which takes away most of the driving enjoyment.

I did a trip recently on my own and did the same.. I went round the M25 to Brighton via the supplying BMW dealer and back home.. Stopped overnight in Brighton.
I total I did about 260 miles and average 31.9mpg down to Brighton and by the time I got home averaged 30.6. A few roadworks with avg speed cameras kept the cruise control set at 54-56mph. Otherwise I cruised under 85mph and made an effort to avoid hard acceleration. However I did make the odd 100mph blat and joined the M25 off the M23 quickly... then when near home on my own 'private stretch off road' had a quick 2 mile 'play' with a 911C4S upto and beyond 130/140 - it did not last long and still achieved a good average mpg over the journey. Normally average 23-26mpg. |

My goals are opposite (at least while on track).
Since I'm trying to get on the throttle earlier, and stay on it longer, I take low mileage as progress! So far I'm down to 6 mpg Neil |

I commute quite a bit in my 1M.
I live in Dubai and my clinical rotations span both the city of Abu Dhabi and AlAin. Each is 150 km away. When I first got the car I was driving like a baby. I managed 9.7L per 100 km. flooring it and driving an average of 180 kph will make me finish half the tank in 150 km. now I get a more respectable 12.7 L per 100 km. that includes air conditioning as the outside temperature hits 45 degree Celsius.

No wonder I'm so slow. I'm only down to 9 mpg.

I don't think the trip computer will report anything under 6.0mpg, at least mine won't. You may not see much more progress.
