Higher mileage reliability...128i...anybody?

Im at the point where Im starting to think about buying out lease...also I have been putting a lot of miles on lately going out of town and its kinda worrying me. Im in a 2012 128i manual...with no extras like nav xenons act.

Anybody here with 100,000-150,000+ miles on their 128i? Can you let us all know how it has held up and where the trouble areas were, if any, thanks!

Im honestly not anticipating a lot of responses...higher mileage topics are very rare on this forum...im not sure if its because there aren't many out there or people dump them before they get too high...

I don't think you'll get many responses, but for what it's worth I have 49K miles on a 2009 128i with no real issues. I expect to keep the car for at least another 5 years.

Well with no HPFP/turbos you've already eliminated the majority of the issues with the 135i

Don't forget there's no direct injection either (no carbon buildup). There's a guy with an E90 325i with over 200,000 miles on it and documented the issues he's had. He's done some DIYing to reduce his ownership costs. Since the E90 325i is similar to our cars its a fair comparison. Personally I'm not overly worried just save a few thousand a year for emergency maintenance costs and find an indy garage that specializes in modern BMW's. Bet you'll end up with surplus cash.

There aren't any 100,000+mile 128i's on here that I'm aware of but I'm almost to 50K and nothing major over almost 5 years. The '08s had taillight issues and I had my amp go from the premium audio system but I'm sure BMW worked those kinks out over the past 5 years. The N52 is a solid engine, they lug 5 series and X5s around, the drive train was built to handle 300 hp all day long so my only guess is maybe the automatic might be a weak link long term but since you are cool and have a 3rd pedal you should be golden... drive it and love it!

I have 65k on my 128. I have had a rash of problems since the warranty ran out a year ago.

Lately, it's been reliable.

I took my 57,000 mile 2009 128i to the dealer for the battery recall and they suggested an inspection - so I said yes. Despite the car being just 7,000 miles and 6 months out of warranty, they suggested:

- replace front struts
- replace front strut mounts
- replace oil filter housing seal
- replace transmission shift shaft seal

Overall quoted at $3,300!!!

I took it to an indy:

- replace front struts - was needed because one was leaking. Total parts and labor $700, including 4-wheel alignment.
- replace front strut mounts - this was NOT needed. Dealer wanted $500 for this. Considering parts are around $200, they tacked on $300 in labor - for no additional labor! The strut mounts come out as part of the strut replacement. Bastards!
- replace oil filter housing - was needed and done by indy for $300. Dealer wanted $800.
- replace transmission shift shaft seal - there is very slight seepage and according to indy would be premature to replace.

So, $1,000 at indy vs $3,300 at the stealership.

Other than that the dealer fixed a couple of issues under warranty a couple of years back, including replacing driver's window motor and fixing AC leak.

Overall not too bad so far. It is definitely worth it to find an independent BMW specialist.
