Lightbulb A_Squared's Walnut Blasting Journal (Pics & Videos)

Hey Everybody,

I just wanted to start this thread/journal on the walnut blastings I've done in the past and currently do to show some of the valve conditions at various mileages. I started offering the WB service here locally in Las Vegas awhile back after I did my own. After I bought my pre-owned 1er, I was quoted $1000 by the stealership . So I went ahead and got everything I needed and did my own, then started offering the service to help out fellow N54 owners in the community. I have about 10 cars, including my own, under my belt at this point. I am not a certified mechanic or anything, actually work in the medical field, but I'm just a big car and DIY guy. At this point, I can pretty much do this in my sleep.

I perform all the work out of my home garage. Having the intake adapter and blasting wand makes the job extremely clean. I always change the intake manifold gaskets as it is recommended anytime you remove the manifold. Walnut shells can be purchased locally at Harbor Freight. I never try to filter the old one out of the vacuum as I've read some people do this, always buy and use new walnut shells. To turn the valves, the easiest and most efficient way by far is to use a remote starter switch. I got one from amazon and it works like a charm, I have the valves turned and closed within 1 min. Much easier than attempting to turn it by hand. I'll go ahead and post a video below on how to use that as well.

One big misconception is that the walnut blasting alone is going to remove all the carbon build up. Well, it doesnt. I go at some of the stubborn build up with a set of small picks, some hooked and curved to reach the difficult areas around the valves. Unfortunately, there are just some areas that you cannot get the wand to point to. So I typically just alternate between blasting and using the picks until I'm satisfied. I've gotten a lot of good feedback from every customer, it's a big difference in throttle response and overall smoothness. I will continue to post new pictures and videos as I do more walnut blastings. If anybody has any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for looking!

--Amer

P.S. A lot are videos as its easier for me to take video proof for customers who drop off their cars to me. I just edit out their names to make the video cleaner for forums purposes.

Here is my setup (yes, the hookah is part of my arsenal too lol)

Here is what the motor looks like with the intake manifold off and ready to go

I've been having trouble with youtube videos embedding so I hope they work

Here is how to use the remote starter switch

Just got mine blasted by A_Squared at 60K. My car drives a lot smoother and you can feel it on your accelerations. No more hesitations. I highly recommend it and He did a great job for a great price! It's not allowing me to upload pics atm

Is this not something you would get done on an n52?? I would think any engine could benefit from it but most seem to be talking 135.

The N52 motor does not use a direct injection system like the N54 does. Therefore it's not susceptible to the carbon build up like the N54.

PM me a price quote, car has been stuttering a bit w/ random misfires and my dealership refuses to even look at the valves. says its "normal". Might have to make a trip up there to see if a walnut blast will help smooth things over (sitting at 45k miles). Rather drive than cough up 1k at the dealership.

Mine had to be done at 45K. So, your probably due. I'm about to get my second blast at 90K. But, the Indy shop here will do it for $500.

I'm lined up to do a forum member's N55 this Sunday. I know there has been some discussion in regards to the N55 being "cleaner" than the N54, so those assumptions should be put to rest one way or another. I will take pictures to show what we find the valves to look like. Stay Tuned!

When I asked for a quote from the dealer they had to talk to the tech who does it and he said they're never walnut blasted an N55, only N54s. So they were kinda surprised I was even asking but my car has gotten very rough idle lately. I'm going to have someone local do it and will try and get pics.

Would like to see that. Apparently they made many changes to the N55 to reduce buildup. Interested to see if this is true or not.

Unfortunately, guy cancelled on me last minute after he was having some problems with his car. Couldn't bring it over. If anybody is interested, I'm still curious and willing to do this on an N55 to see.
